Agreed, I don't care for Panerai but that one does look like they got it right. My issue is - I think the Explorer 6610 & 1016 are perfection in design. It pains me, having such large wrists, that I cannot wear them without looking a bit odd. But the new one doesn't resemble them as much because of the shiny!

Nothing from Omega that to me looks like future classics. You can easily get the feeling that they are not "trying" with all the colour combo's and constant new speedy and seamaster iterations. I would take a plain Speedy Professional any day over anything new from Omega this year. The new Black Bay 36 and Black Bay PVD from Tudor are quite nice.

all new speedys together now:

I find the blue Speedy Moonphase utterly out of this planet. I'm drawn towards it as if it was a black hole. For sure in my top 3 at Baselworld.

Thanks!

Sorry for posting another picture, but I'm wearing it on a black strap today and I think it works wells even though I'm not a huge fan of black straps.

Incredibly versatile. Works with the bracelet and pretty much any color strap.

Now back to the topic at hand. Between rolex and Omega, the updated Explorer is the only one that I might buy. I really like the updated Daytona, but it seems like it will wear the same. A bit too small for my liking.

The air king dial is horrendous and they ruined the otherwise very nice DJ1 with that terrible clasp on a jubilee.

That Speedy 57 is one cool watch. Thanks for posting...it certainly helps to forget the Basel 2016 Omega LSD trip.

Why is an Omega fan like me seem more interested in what Rolex is offering at Baselworld 2016?
i'm super impressed with new Rolex Explorer 214270. Really love the detailing & that old school sports vibe.... Shame on Me [emoji17]

Could not agree more.

That's not just a swing and a miss, that's nasty slider that the hitter decides to swing at too late and nearly falls over in total embarrassment.

This watch isn't even the over the top "Leopard" Daytona bad, it just looks incredibly cheap. When I first saw this photo the first thing that crossed my mind was "very bad knock off watch" but unfortunately it's real I guess.
I really can't imagine who would wear that.

I'm happy that Rolex "fixed" the Explorer I. Now I want one. I couldn't handle the small hands in the previous version.

It's very simple, and that's commendable for sure. But it's still so shiny - it'd be much much better without any shiny bits on the dial at all.

@abrod520 , I would say that compared with other Rolex sports watches/GMT range, the new Explorer 1 is the least shiny. No PCLs for a start!

As for the numerals the squarish font has been a key part of the design DNA since ref. 14270. I am quite sure that if you attempted to disguise the watch, removing all text from the dial and changing it´s colour to blue, for example, many would still recognize the watch as a modern Explorer 1 derived design, just based on the squarish font.

Ablogtowatch probably has some of the best photos of the new version:
http://www.ablogtowatch.com/rolex-explorer-214270-watch-2016/

To me the metal numerals kind of make the watch. It's the main design identifier of the model. That what would make me hesitate on getting a new one.

@Nobel Prize and others: you know I am beginning to understand your POV on the lumed numerals. I do think they look gorgeous when lit up in the dark, but I have to agree, after looking at several internet photos....they have now perhaps become a bit "too white" under daylight viewing conditions...perhaps the old 214270 with just the changed hands would be a better option after all😀

Watch-insider has some interesting pics showing the new non-glossy finish on the dial:
http://www.watch-insider.com/news/baselworld-2016-rolex-explorer/

As we all know, judging watches just based on photos can be extremely misleading...I remember when the Globemaster came out...the press photos made the coin bezel look cheap and poorly made...boy was I wrong on that interpretation after seeing the watch live. For the new Explorer 1 I think the metal outlining on the numerals will probably reflect light nicely and subdue the "overexposed" white on the numerals.

Well, we will have to wait and see boys and girls....

So wondering to know whats the difference between 8500 vs 8900?
8500 + METAS = 8900? 😕

Nothing from Omega that to me looks like future classics.

I think that is the essence here...

While Rolex is fostering their heritage (and correcting mistakes) omega seems all over the map...

Just like in the past 60 years where they have not managed to - 4 example - put a face to an important subbrand like Seamaster

Hi @wx_073
[emoji1] [emoji14] You're gonna get an Amazing Avalanche of answers to your question soon enough.....
My knowledge is rather limited . All i know is there are lots more Non Magnetic alloy parts inside METAS cert calibre 8900 like the lever , escape wheel , balance & balance screws including the Silicon balance spring making the whole watch able to resist Magnetic Fields of at least 1.5 Tesla. MRI scanners have Magnetic fields ranging from 0.5 -7.0 Teslas ...& Yeah..For Gods Sakes DO NOT attempt a Stupid Stunt of placing a calibre 8900 inside the MRI. Your baby will survive no doubt...but Somebody's gonna pull out 3 Million U.S Dollars out of your A$$ to replace the damage MRI scanners...

Is that a blue dial syed. Nice watch. I agree the new Explorer is good. Something about the new speed master moon phase has my interest since it is in blue but I think it going to quite big and way to many things on the dial. That said unless I see nothing decided.

Isn't 1.5 tesla equivilant to 15,000 gauss? Which is the same as the 8500 movement

My old SM PO 600 m Ti 45.5 is a calibre 8500 not Metas cert not anti Magnetic to 15000 Gs .It just says Co Axial chronometer on the dial. The new SM PO 600 in baselworld says master chronometer on the dial calibre 8801

I know everyone uses the term Gauss to measure magnetic fields but i prefer the term Tesla to honour Nikola Tesla ,. the Greatest ElectroMagnetic Genius who ever lived....
I guess if Nikola Tesla was still alive today... .i would call him.." Magneto "

I'm assuming it's in Gauss units because "magnetic resistance to >15,000 Gauss" sounds way better than "magnetic resistance to >1.5 Tesla"

That, and Omega wanted to poke Rolex in the eye with its measly 'mil Gauss'.
