What would be a good place to start I hear vintage Rolex are fairly sound "investments" but I would more like to wear it a bit as well. I have a current model submariner so looking for somehting a bit different from that i guess.....any ideas welcome!

I'd go a 1675 GMT, or if you want something really different a 1016 Explorer

The 1016 Explorer was produced from I believe the late 1950s through to about 1989, a very long production run, price is dependent on condition, I'd say $3,500-8,000 depending on dial and condition

Depends what you're after really, Ian Flemming, the creator of Bond owned a circa 1960 1016 Explorer, so for that reason maybe go early? You will pay a premium for the privilege though, while a 1970s one will be considerably cheaper.

I'm with Steve on a GMT, as you already have a Submariner. The GMT's are really nice travel watches since the bezels rotate and if you get a model with the 3085 or later movement the independent GMT hand enables you to keep track of three timezones. A very handy feature if you do business in multiple timezones or travel across multiple timezones. The Explorer's fixed bezel makes it less handy. The 16760 "Fat Lady" can still be had relatively inexpensively and was produced for a relatively short period of time, making it relatively rare and if you want beautiful ask Steve to post a pic of his Root Beer nipple dial GMT.

The other one I'd look at is the Daytona. Maintenance costs are higher, but these are beautiful distinctive watches. The Zenith derived movement watches have been rising in value over the past years.

Lastly, if you want a Sub on steroids take a look at the Sea Dwellers. These are the professional dive watches in the Rolex line. They are beefier and more tool like than the Subs. Personally I've been looking for a 16660 these days, but unfortunately the window seems to be running away from me, as they are getting harder to find.

This is something I don't get about Rolex vintage collectors - the GMT (1675) and Sub (5513) both had the same case, crown, and bezel, with only some color changes and the one feature added. If you own one, why own the other? I like the orange hand Explorer since the dial is at least noticeably different. Or how about a Zephyr? Crosshair dial goodness right there, and can be had relatively cheap. It would make a fine dress watch to compliment the sport's watch that the Sub is.

I don't know, there's just something wrong about a Rolex dress watch to me, it doesn't suit the brand

Point taken.

.... although I've fancied a few of the modern Cellini models.

I would go for a nice gilt GMT or a 1016.

I've had this one for a while mate. This Sub was the reason I had to sell my two Speedsonics as well as a couple of others. This watch hobby needs to be a self licking ice cream so four out to cover the one in!
Another gratuitous shot

Nicely played. 1 outstanding watch is worth 4 lesser watches any day of the week. That same math is exactly how I funded my VC.

Just something I'd like to mention to the OP, as far as investment potential goes, I think its not huge. These watches will appreciate for the most part, slowly or matching inflation, but not much more
