is the crystal on this watch supposed to have the omega symbol etched onto it?

Yes - and it does have it

BMTI

It is there, but faint due to focus on the dial elements.

@mikyjimy - if you look carefully, you can just about see it on the crystal and the reflection on the hands
(oriented on a 2 o'clock / 8 o'clock axis )

Basically British vs. American English. Two people separated by a common language.

I always thought "chronometre" was the French spelling and, as the Swiss speak French it became the language of Horology.

I think "Chronometer" is the same in English or American English AFAIK

Chronometer is both the British and American English spelling (I’m British).
Chronometre i assume is the French/Swiss.

I wonder when it went “obsolete”? 1959?

I am not sure 'obsolete' is the right way to describe this particular typeface change, the French are touchy about the attenuation of their language after all, and rightly so. My take on the change in spelling of Chronometer from the RE to ER version on Omega watches* is that it happened circa 1956. If I see an RE after that I suspect something it's wrong, and if I see a ER before that I know it is a redial.

In case we need all to declare our primary linguistic preference, I'm an Anglophone. With a local twang.

*as opposed to in the French language which perseveres. Dieu merci.

My theory is that Chronometre was a french/swiss spelling and changed (at some point - see @padders comment) to Chronometer to satisfy English speaking market places. I could not, with confidence pin down the date and am happy to be proved wrong

Not too sure about that. Take a Google search of Ref. 2943, cal. 504 Calendar model. These are all over the board. Some “RE” and some “ER”. Serial numbers in 16M range, which is 1958-9.

I put 1956-7 first but edited it as I’m working from memory, perhaps the latter year is a better fit. Or even ‘58. I don’t know that particular model you mention well but those I follow do seem to adhere to my dating. I’d be mighty suspicious of a 2852 with RE any later than that for instance. It does seem the change was in the early 16m region. It would have been gradual I would think as they used up dial stock.

Thanks to all of you for the advice. I managed to get the watch at what I think is a decent and fair price. I should get it in about a week. . Again, thanks for all the advice, and if you ever happen to run into me, please ask me what time it is. I can assure you this won't be going into any box. Life is very short and very precious, and this bad boy is going to make every minute just a little bit better, one second at a time. this will have to suffice until then.

You did well! I was quite tempted by this watch and likely would have bought it if I was in the US. A similar grand luxe in lesser condition sold for $15,500 last year.

A link to this sale would be great for archival purposes.

It’s a stunner, OP, and I’ve always liked that bracelet design. Wear it in good health.
