hi, first time buyer here. have seen this really nice looking example on ebay, and from what i can tell it looks pretty good; nice sharp edges & lugs and the dial looks pretty original. however i am not a professional or experienced so it would be good to get some other opinions-especially with the movement etc. or if anyone knows anything about the model, it looks like a calatrava, or at least what comes up when you google that, however i have read elsewhere that there is no such thing as an omega calatrava.
hope you can help
thanks

Yes, that’s correct. A Patek designation.

I would normally expect to see feuille hands (not dauphine) with that dial, but there's a lot of variability, so I can't swear they're wrong. However, if the hands are silver and the numerals are gilt, that would probably confirm that they are replacements.

If you tell us the case size and asking price, we can probably advise you better.

yes i thought the hands looked a bit suspicious. the case is 33mm and seller is asking for $520. the seller is based in Athens which may or may not be a concern.

Not terrible, but it's not a bargain. 33mm is pretty small, and you will see decent 35mm 30T2 models come up in that price range now and then. Since you are new, I'll just remind you that you will need to be prepared to invest another couple hundred for a service.

ok that’s worth knowing thank you. yeah i’m prepared to spend that on services. hope you don’t mind me posting here asking if i’m not buying a fake or something- just don’t want to get scammed. i understand the vintage market can be a dangerous place

The only potential issue I see is the hands. FYI, the 2495 inside the case-back is the reference number. So if you do a google images search for omega 2495 and you can look at other examples and see if it looks legit. Note that there will be a bunch of different dial/hand variants since that reference apparently had a lot of different production runs. Yours is the 19th. But you can at least check that the movement is correct, the serial is in the right general range, and the case is the correct style.

ok sounds like it might be a good first buy. had a google and found a very similar one with a heavy patina, but different hands as you say

FWIW, the case is very sharp on the OP example. Much better than average for a 70 year-old watch.

just having a look at the 30t2 cals on ebay, seen this nice one with an unusual logo do you think that’s original?

It certainly looks like a three piece case. Good luck with your purchase.

Be careful because subseconds calibers (cal. 26x series) and central seconds (cal. 28x series) have different pinion measurements. The minute hand should not be longer than the distance to the minute rail.

Personally I would go for the original look, not dauphine.
