I

Franken SpaceView $500. Overpaid for an attractive, over polished, service crown 564 Onyx Indices Constellation: $1500. If $2k is the extent of my vintage noob tax, I count myself fortunate.
I've been at this for close to 8 years and I am still paying a yearly noob tax. 😗
My noob tax was a $500 (undisclosed) redialed big hippo Seamaster which I ended up selling (disclosed) for what I paid (it was really pretty) and keeping the factory BOR that came on it. I guess I should consider myself lucky.
Has anyone started a noob tax confessional thread? These stories are extremely instructive.

Although there are plenty of things to be disappointed about with this watch, I would not return a watch that was otherwise accurately described (and I'm not opining on whether this one was or not) simply because a hand came off in transit. That happened to me as part of my purchase of a watch that is without question one of the best watches in my collection. The second hand came off at some point during shipment, there was no damage to the dial, and I simply had my watchmaker remount the hand and moved on. The watch was otherwise spectacular and remains so. No regrets.

Things can definitely happen in transit, it has happened to me on both ends.

I used to have to have the shutters on my view camera lenses rebuilt every year or two from shipping them around the country- and not due to any impact. The screws inside would back themselves out due to the micro-vibrations in transit.
