Some advice on a 105.003-65 Ed White Pre-moon

Hey,

I have been looking for a vintage Omega for a while now and came across an 105.003-65 Ed white that I think looks very good.
The seller is a professional watchmaker and will provide a 1 year warranty and have gone over the watch and scored each component.

I've done some research and bought the Moonwatch only book, what a resource! I can't seem to find anything wrong with this authenticity wise.

Some info

Model 105.003-65
Serial 25441584

What I have checked for is

Dial A7. Tall markers - Close T

  • T spacing looks correct in relation to minute markers (28.4 - 28.2)
  • Connected S- and p in "Speedmaster"
  • Omega long middle Stroke

B1 Dot Diagonal 70 (DON) Bezel

  • Tachymetre goes to 500
  • Dot diagonal below 0 of 70
  • Dot diagonal above 0 of 90

I don't have a shot of the crown from the side- so no clue here. And the case has been polished in a non-flattering way. The engraving on the back is more- or less gone. Another disadvantage is of course that there is no bracelet.

The asking price is 12k USD.

So, do you see anything wrong with the watch? And what do you think of the asking price?

While you’ve assessed each component for correctness, you haven’t mentioned much about condition or the most important factor - attractiveness.

Personally, I’m not turned on by the dial. There looks to be significant hand drag on the hour subdial and several of the hour markers have dirty looking lume. It’s hard to judge the condition and colour of the dial body as the pictures aren’t great.
As you say the case isn’t particularly sharp.

I think the price is far too high in the current market given it’s condition and lack of a bracelet.

Thanks for the feedback - I think I need to look at more samples, and get a feel for price/quality. I agree on the price, but I guess the dealer adds a premium for handling the sale, and going over the watch and providing the buyer a one year guarantee.
It would be more correct to put the price for this at perhaps 10k, in a direct trade.

I don't know what hand drag is- can you explain?

Look closely at the bottom subdial. The hour hand has scratched a circle round the dial. It looks awful and once seen can not be unseen, or improved. The lugs have been heavily polished and look a bit like soap bars, again I am not a fan. I personally wouldn't go there at anywhere near that price even at $8K it looks toppy for me.

Terrible photos, I can't even begin to judge condition.

I don’t think it’s a $10k watch either.

What guarantee is the dealer offering? Even if it’s fully serviced, unless you know by whom, you have no idea of the quality of the service so at best it’s no better than the warranty a good watchmaker would provide. What I’m saying is, I don’t add much value, if any, to a ‘dealer guarantee’.

Hand drag is where one of the hands, often a subdial hand, isn’t sitting flush and has dragged or scraped along a portion of the dial, leaving a scratch. Sometimes it’s barely noticeable, but it seems fairly harsh on this example.

Yeah, sorry. The Watch is not in my possession.

Yeah! That's pretty bad! Absolutely something I'll look for going forward. I'm in absolutely no hurry here, just having fun learning a lot about this line of watches.

Yeah, that bottom subdial is pretty bad. Thanks for taking the time.

Welcome, and it is nice to read that you hade done some research regarding Speedys!

Have you looked at this website?
The author is a very informed and skilled collector and is also here on the Forum:
https://speedmaster101.com/105-003/

He has also done amazing videos, here is one regarding the reference that you showed:

I can only agree with the other members about the EW that you are looking at....
I think that you should take your time, and study much more, and then study more...😉!

If you are planing to spend that kind of money......??

And start by looking at the private watch sales here, there are a few nice ones, and there will be more!
Here is one that will make your heart stop beating:

Enjoy the hunt, and please do come back with more Speedys that you find (before you buy them)!

I agree with everyone who has posted so far. It is a lot of money for a first Speedmaster and from the few photos provided I would think that with a little time, you could do better. It is very polished.

You may get better value for money with a 145.022 - 69 or 145.022 - 71. For the price you are talking about, you could maybe get both!

Good luck.
