You are right but that isn't the argument. Dan suggests that there are dials out there that mimic the 12 sided PP shape by paint only and are in fact dome dials with no kink, just a Trompe-l'œil brush effect. I disagree but its hard to produce convincing evidence either way without removing the dial and looking at it completely side on.

What exactly is happening here Dan? If this is a flat dial with a brush PP effect, how come the line continues over the bit where the paint is missing...

That is gunk.

I'm willing to put in eur 100 so we can buy a very bad 168004 for a couple of hundred on the internet.
I just did exactly this, well its not a bad one but it is a 168.004 PP. Yes I am prepared to suffer for my art. I'll report back when it arrives.

Holy thread revival Batman. I am a man of my word, the newly acquired hidden crown 168.004 mentioned above was serviced recently, link to many pics below and a couple of close ups I took. I'll be honest and admit that there is no obvious step or plane transition at the scallop edges on this so much as it pains me to admit it, @Dan S might have had a point above, at least with respect to the hidden crown models. I can't say I've seen a dog leg or curved lug PP with an obvious tromp l'ceil effect as yet, but this hidden crown example hasn't got much of a kink at all and much of the effect is in the dodecagonal shading. It might have a slight bend but its so smooth as to be near imperceptible. Maybe at the date window can you just make out a plane change. See for yourself but it maybe that some kinked scallops on PPs are more obvious than others.
