Someone compile a list of all the threads asking about a 2998-4 and see where it gets us?

I've searched, can't find anything.

He might have posted on WUS or Reddit's Omega Subforums...

I read this as referring to this forum, but you're right, it's ambiguous.

I've tried too. Almost impossible. Also, I'm not very patient.

Ok, re-reading the article - he says his daughter gummed the datejust when she was 2 and now she's 5 - so this was a while a go.

He also says he sold the watch to a dealer in Boston - that would be European Watch Company.

And here's the watch: https://www.europeanwatch.com/21957.html

Notice the matching damage/wear to the bezel inset at 3 and 4.

EXIF data on the EWC pictures shows they were shot 2 July 2015.

"Most of these “real pilots” couldn’t believe that the watch wasn’t a knock-off. The pictures I posted on the online Omega Forum looked “too good.” They were right; most watches for sale were newer and rather beat-up - dials scratched and dull, enamel chipped and worn, parts swapped out or missing entirely. I explained that my grandfather hadn’t worn it much, that he’d been interested in keeping safe in his bedside table. Most of them didn’t believe me."

Looking at the pictures of the watch, it doesn't look "too good".

The state of the case and the lugs which have lost their chamfers show's that it was worn quite a lot and likely polished to boot.

He may have posted it on an Omega Forum... but I don't think it was this one.

Reading lots of threads from back in 2014/2015, the Speedmaster sleuths were out in force - and wouldn't have said this was "too good" ::facepalm1::

I have no personal dealings/affiliation with EWC, but would a "reputable" dealer really lowball someone walking into their shop like the article suggests? Pawnshops I could understand.

Abso-freakin-lootely. With the amount of information at our disposal nowadays (LITERALLY at our fingertips), if you get shafted on the price of an item your selling it's your own fault for not doing a bit of homework / research on it.

The initial offer according to the story was $1,200, which was less than 10% of the market value according to the old OF thread. I think it would be really disappointing for a top-notch dealer to take such advantage of someone. However, we need to remember that many details in the story seem greatly exaggerated.

Sounds a bit fictional in my view. And I badly needed a time context - not clear when the story really took place...but a nice read nevertheless

EWC sold the watch in mid-2015... so maybe 6 months before that.

That price for the 2998 doesn't quite sound right then...

Which price?

EWC were asking $25k from the look of the thread where the guy is asking if the watch is too expensive.

The seller doesn’t mention the figure they paid him.

Assuming EWC's sale price was around 20-25k. Divided by 4 that means the author got between 5-7k.

What was a 2998 worth in 2015 between collectors?
