Thanks for posting it, that was a fun read although I ended up finding it hard to suspend my disbelief about some of the details, but maybe it's intended to be a sort of semi-fictional account. I found it a little strange (or maybe unbelievable) that he went back to the guy who initially low-balled him, and then proceeded to accept an offer lower than one he had already been made by a different dealer. If someone had tried to rip me off, I would probably be a bit angry with him, and the last thing I'd do is let him rip me off again. And also, for someone who supposedly owns a DateJust, he sounded confused about Air-Kings and DateJusts, like he didn't know which was which.

My father who was in his late 60's gave me his father's watch one time for Xmas. I had it restored and gave it back to him the following Xmas in a nice acrylic display case to set on his desk. Told him it wasn't time to pass down a watch. When the time comes, I will receive the watch and someday pass it on to my son. I hope it will never be sold.

I agree that I would never take a watch back to someone who knowingly low-balled me (shows poor character) and I will never sell my grandfather's watch.

It sounds like the man needed a downpayment for an apartment more than he needed his grandfather's watch. But it doesn't make sense that he'd sell it for less to the guy that lowballed him the first time, including accepting a less valuable watch than the one the buyer had agreed to.

But the seller can choose his buyer for more reasons than just money - he just didn't explain it well enough to me. I sold my Silver Snoopy for 15-20% less than it was worth at the time, because I believed the buyer was going to give it to his wife for Valentine's day and that he didn't have enough money to pay me more than what I'd paid for it. But he wired the cash to me before I had to ship it, and I saved myself the worry of being scammed if I'd sold it to someone I didn't know as well.

He seems happy with his decision, but maybe he should have done more research before selling it at such a low price

Strange story, as he described a lot of sentimental moments and ended up selling it to lowballer......

Yeah plus the dealer sold it for 4x what he paid for. And the guy read OF ?
If the story went this way, I wonder why he'd gift 75% of a lot of money to a guy who tried to shaft him, but then again if both were happy with the deal... ::facepalm1::

Fiction. Pure fiction. The key to telling a good bullshit story is to include a lot of truth.

"I'll give you 15k right now".

"Thanks but no thanks. I'd rather go back to the guy who offered me peanuts first time around and sell it to him for 10k".

The watch meant so much to him that he tried to open the back with a pair of pliers. :whistling:

Did the author create a thread here and ask questions or just come here looking for information? If so, we need to find that thread.

He makes it sound like he posted photos and asked questions, because he says that members were skeptical about the excellent condition of his watch. I don't know whether he started a thread or piggy-backed on another thread. Or if it's entirely fiction.

I read the article and thought the same conclusion too. Now, the more i think about it, I seem to remember a thread about it.

'A robust community of wealthy, but not obscenely wealthy, men has sprung up that drives the market. Most of these men either are, or really want to be, “real pilots.”'

The man know's nothing... it's obvious that I want to be an unreal pilot.

You can be as unreal a pilot as you wish, as long as I can be the Pseudo-Cousteau of the forum.

Someone compile a list of all the threads asking about a 2998-4 and see where it gets us?
