Not trying to troll, but I don't understand the overwhelming negative response. I get that aesthetics/taste are subjective, but this particular watch seems to have really, truly pissed people off. Is it just because it's an anti-useful watch?
I almost read it as a way of Rolex having fun. The Deepsea, a watch capable of going *literally* deeper than the deepest ocean (humming old songs now), is just as literally useless, as this new watch. Most of our watches are, in fact, not used to their full capacity, of course; I'm presently waiting while one of my daughter's in ballet class, and my 20ATM watch is...not...useful. Great for telling the time and looking good, but not for anything like its intended purpose.
I think the watch is great--I don't have the money or connections for one, but it blows my mind to think of the incredibly utilitarian engineers at Rolex tasked with developing this not just *useless* watch but a watch that seems almost anti-useful (again, though: I'd love to hear someone offer a strident defense for the utility of a watch capable of going deeper than any spot on earth). I like it for the same reason I like many silly things: it's interesting and fun and shows an appreciation for serious play. The way people respond to this--as if insulted--feels almost defensive, as if no one wants to have to admit they don't need all the Tool Watch elements we all are drawn to.
