Help Required - Buying a Watch for Partner - Thinking Speed Moon

When considering whether you want a hesalite crystal and steel back vs. a sapphire crystal and display back, consider that the steel back is the model certified for space missions. The display back model is less resistant to being magnetized and therefore flunks spaceworthiness tests.

Regarding water resistance, the moonwatch is probably okay being caught in the rain or a splash while washing your hands. Just don't go swimming or into the shower with it, and have it checked regularly.

The 3570.50 is not the first Speedmaster, but early models before about 1970 go up very rapidly in price if they're in reasonable condition. They also get harder to buy as parts are more likely to be replaced with incorrect replacements. The numbers like 3570.50 are case reference numbers: they specify the type of case, dial, hands. The serial number is applied to the movement; those are true serial numbers that can be used to identify that individual watch movement. You would have to get the back of the watch opened in order to see it. There are also calibers, which are the model of the movement, and those are also engraved on the inside so you'd need to get it opened to see it.

If properly maintained, the watch is good for 50m, so it does not have to be babied. If checked regularly and seals replaced as needed, it can go in the water just fine.

I might be boring, but I would prefer to choose myself 馃榾
That naturally is my fear. Especially as he drools over the Panerai Luminor Watches 馃槙

You already got enough information for the moonwatch ( the 005 as you say it ).
Just know these 2 things -
1- This is not going to be waterproof. ( your partner wears a planet ocean right now and thats a diver`s watch). So keep in mind that he will have to probably take it out and keep it in pockets if he is out and it starts raining( well to be fair , its water resistant to 50m but I keep it as far as possible from water).
2- You can get a brand new watch with Omega international warranty and the shoe box sized presentation box along with some other goodies from authorized dealers for very close to $3500.
Thanks - he actually purchased the PO purely for the appearance. This was many many years ago and his first big watch buy.

If I went for the Speedmaster. It would most definitely be the closed back and hesalite crystal. That's one thing I do know. Moonwatch V Planet Ocean size comparison - am I right in saying its a couple of mm? noticeable to you guys that have both?

So a question for those that like watches outside of Omega.... Panerai Luminor V Moonwatch?

I would tend to go for new with Moonwatch as that would be within my budget as mentioned by Mayankyadav above. If a Panerai then would have to be second hand and I think from looking, it would be 10 years+ old. Can stretch to 拢4k if I have to.

I really do appreciate all your help guys - trodden into the unknown world but finding it all very interesting.

They are very different watches in appearance if nothing else.

I would buy him the Speedmaster brand new from an authorised dealer or Omega boutique. You should be able to get that for within your 拢3,500 budget. But ask them about returns - worst case scenario you give it to him and he doesn't like it - you can exchange/return it.

He'll like it though - there aren't many that don't like the Moonwatch.

That's certainly a thought isn't it. If he receives and thinks wow wish I had the money to put towards a Panerai then he can return. A friend has just been into Watchfinder and tried the Speedy on for my benefit and now wants to buy it himself!!

I think the PO he has is a 2200.50.00 which means it has a 45.5mm case size. The speedy pro has a 42mm case size.

I like Panerai but in the 3.5 - 4K price range I'd go with a Speedmaster Pro (or a FOIS). For me, and this is just personal opinion, I like Panerais with a date window, exhibition case back, and a protected crown guard which would be difficult to find in that price range.

Just to clarify, Omega Boutiques will sell it for the retail price of $5250+tax ( may be a 5% discount at the max). An authorized dealer will sell it close to $3500 ( and if bought online from them , you may avoid paying sales tax).
Just call several authorized dealers and ask them their best price and buy from the one that gives you best price.

Are you in the U.K.? I think a lot of people were presuming you were in the US.

In the U.K. A brand new Speedmaster can be had for under 拢3.5k

Goldsmiths should give you at least 10% discount if you ask.

Cool, and that leaves a bit of change for the inevitable collection of Speedmaster straps, NATOs, etc....

Just looking at the straps on the omega site - it allows you to change virtually - wow what a change in appearance of the watch. Superb!
