At least you are getting the work done in the warmer months. At one point I was in cozy hotels in EU on an extended business trip while all dry wall and roof insulation was off on our main level in January due to major structural work. (Previous owner had cut away roof trusses to install skylights which were failing. How did the home inspector miss that when we bought you ask? ) Wife and kid were basically living in the basement. I was not popular. Hang in there.

Come to Florida, I just bought a newly renovated home for my mother at $28US sqft. That's about $275euro/m2. New floors, paint, appliances, air conditioning, everything.

I was flying back from Europe one time and next to me was an Englishman..we got to chatting and I asked why he was coming to America. He said he came to do Christmas shopping. Surprised, I asked why? He said it was cheaper for him to fly to Florida, buy the presents and ship them back home, than pay for them in England. He also said it was cheaper to fly his family to Orlando Disneyworld and back than to go to Paris Disneyworld.

Funny world.

You should have got her something way up in upstate New York. Yes she would freeze during the winter but you could have got her 109 acres for 50 bucks

Yes. Some areas in Amsterdam are even 10k per m2. It's getting like London.

We have social housing here and when airbnb came to Amsterdam a lot of people rented their houses to tourists and from that rent they lived like kings in Spain. If I want I could airbnb my house and every holiday would be totally free with profit. I even know a guy who was working in catering and he made like EUR 30k a year. But he had two rooms left in the house which he airbnb'd for 70k a year. Indeed funny world.

By the way, airbnb ruined the essence of Amsterdam in some ways...

Ah, the joys of being a homeowner...

I just got a picture of my 11yo niece SURFING at Wassenaar, just down the road from you. She wasn't wearing a wetsuit, but had an outfit with long pants and sleeves. So maybe you just need to dress warmer for showering?

We have major road construction going on near us for a new subdivision going in - running sewers, water, etc. Several times this summer we woke up in the morning and found we had no water. All outages were supposed to be planned and with advance warning, but we had several that were certainly not. We now keep some bottled water on hand so we can make coffee (and give the dogs water, etc.) and we are lucky that a local hotel is on a different supply, and offered that anyone in the area can drop by to have a shower if the water goes out again.

No fun not having hot water, but on several trips I took to various places, hot water was simply something they never had. I recall being in an archery tournament in Venezuela back in 2001, and the Olympic training center were staying at had no hot water at all. But after a day standing out in the sun in a field, a cold shower felt pretty good...

Hope your gas gets fixed soon.

When I lived in Barcelona as a student I did'nt had water, electricity or a even a toilet for three months. The guy who we rented from forgot to tell us he was rebuilding the place.. So we took showers at the beach and went to the toilet in the local tapas bar in El Born. After the toilet a nice spumante with a chorizo. You did'nt hear me complaining then. But now I'm old with kids. Life needs to be perfect.

No kidding - I understand that as you get older, the tolerance level for such things is much lower...

Now I have dealt with this kind of “insurance claim” in a previous life & obviously they are soon debunked & refuted , but there’s always exceptions & these are genuine claims that stick in my mind that I agreed the insurance company should paid out for .
1,The cat must have jumped on the gas hob & turned the gas on , then when the owner came home he was smoking a cigarette , I couldn’t prove otherwise .No injuries to the owner & no sign of the cat either when I visited the property .
2, A friend while looking after the property as the owners were on holiday ,and didn’t realise the gas fire was not lit & left the gas on , then lit a cigarette .... the friend lived but only after spending three weeks in hospital .

Yes, gas is nothing to be trifled with...recent story here in Canada where a drunk driver ran into a house, rupturing the gas line. Subsequent explosion took out a good part of the neighbourhood, and injured some first responders who were trying to evacuate people...

"Yes hallo, I would like to report a exploded house. The cause? Well, I was taking a cold shower in my mobile shower and then I wanted some heat so I litted the fireplace. Sadly my dog thought I wanted to play so he took the burning wooden block and ran towards the gas pipe. Suddenly the house started burning. I really tried to stop him but I stumbled over my watch suitcase with 34 speedmasters in it, from which 12 were 2998's in pristine condition, so I did not had any time to choose. It was the speedmasters or the dog. I took the dog. The dog lover I am. Anyway, could you please transfer 2,2 million. Thnx a lot."

Make it cash. And you know what, keep a couple of k for yourself and get yourself a nice speedmaster. I'm in a good mood.
