Explorer 2’s sold out everywhere????

I’ve been contemplating an Explorer 2 for the last 6 months, all 3 AD’s I have good relationships with usually have at least one in, but usually have both the white and black dial options in.

Roll on today!! all have sold out and 2 AD’s have names down on a list!!

So...... what’s going on????

1/ Rumours of the model being discontinued with perhaps a new ceramic version???

Or

2/ Demand for any steel Proffesional piece getting that desperate it’s now trickledown to the humble explorer 2 that’s always always been readily available???

I never really understood why the Explorer II wasn't more in demand. That said, with the paucity of other steel models it was only going to be a matter of time until these were out of stock as well.

Rolex strategy: continuously throttle supply, creating demand, maintain price and value, think very long term
Omega strategy: sell as many watches as possible, make as much money as possible, mix in LE's to create some "exclusivity" aura, don't worry about long term as much.

i'm not criticizing either approach.

Disagree with the second part. Prices are going up and people are buying them. Good for long term.

If Rolex released the Explorer II with a cermanic bezel isnt it pretty much the same watch as the all black GMT Master. I mean i guess they have a different GMT hand or whatever but at that point, the differences are really tiny.

Although I guess Rolex could discontinue the all black GMT Master and just have the bi-color bezel variants and the Exp II could be a sort of entry level GMT or something.

Yeah I agree, I can't see Rolex doing this. As far as I'm aware no Ex2 has ever had a black bezel and I don't see Rolex changing that now.

Shame as there was a mock up a couple of years ago (from Rolex passion report?) of an Ex2 with a black bezel and it looked awesome.

Then again, you never know. It wouldn't be exactly the same as the GMT Master as they could also maintain the non rotating aspect of the bezel.

Right but a non rotating bezel and orange GMT are like microscopic differences to most people. Even watch nerds. It would be impossible to justify the current price difference of the two without other meaningful differences

People are shifting their attention to more available, still sports SS models (until demand drives second hand market prices up to the sky and availability at AD goes down to 0 ). During my summer holidays, I've visited many ADs in Europe, most of them had one or two Explorers 2 in stock. I have an older explorer 2 with black dial and I love it, I don't like the newer ones as much.

I was at the local Rolex AD last weekend with a friend overseas. We saw a BNIB Rolex Explorer 2 black dial, going for MSRP.

Kinda surprised that it was available; thinking that all sports models would have been dry.

In my opinion, only two watches from Rolex are looking good with suit, shorts, jeans - Daytona and Explorer 2.

Thanks, it’s a great piece, very versatile and very underrated. The orange 24hr hand and text gives a subtle pop of color, I also wore socks with a matching hint of orange.

😲 Whaaaa? Not an explorer I? Datejust? Oyster Perpetual? Cellini?

Just my humble opinion. I think these are the greatest watches ( especially explorer 3,6,9), but they are for more formal attire, I think. Datejust with shorts, looks like a sub with the suit.

I stopped by an AD in Connecticut a few weeks ago, and they had both black and white dials, so if you're in the area...

I've been wanting to pick up an older model Ex2 with a white dial. Somehow, it always ends up number 2 on my next to get watch list. I'd hate to wait and then they jump up to 6-7k on the used market. That would be unamazing.
