Do a lot of wives not wear watches?

Mrs SouthernScot is petite at 5’2” and has always liked small ladies watches (preferably gold). She has two a Bueche Girod and an Omega DeVille. The BG is nearly thirty years old and bought for a special birthday. The DeVille is about fifteen years old and bought to mark obtaining her PhD. She wears the DeVille most days as the BG is a bit dressy for everyday wear, although for many years it was her only watch. She loves them both and is “reasonably “ understanding of my obsession, she has known me since before my 21st birthday when I was given my Speedmaster so always knew I liked I nice watch!
Recently she has been making comments about a Rolex Datejust similar to that shown by @Togri v. 2.0 above. She has another milestone birthday next year so we’ll see!

Wearing the DeVille at Lake Garda. Incidentally the Milanese bracelet on the BG was made by STS last year, with their equipment described in another thread here, to replace the indentical original which had been badly damaged, and a fine job they made of it

Bought this for her at my watchmaker. It has survived her better than the Movado and the Skagen she destroyed. Tried to buy her a Tag sports watch and she refused to wear it. I see it on her wrist a lot. She also likes my non running space view but I refuse to get it fixed.

Oh, I was in Japan the past June, and I got my mother something she hinted to me over dinner.

It wasn't expensive by any means, but mom knows that I have been collecting watches recently so she wants in too!

I don't know as I would recommend buying something super expensive that you don't know your wife would like...Seems risky unless you really know her taste REALLY well, or you think you can do well reselling it. I have ended up with some jewelry that I wear out of guilt because my husband was so proud of himself for buying and thought he was doing a nice thing, but it's really not my style.

Anyway, as a lady, (and also a wife, which seems to be the criteria here?) I can confirm that I wear watches (obviously since I'm a nerd who signed up to be a member of this forum and likes hunting weird 70's watches), but yes, as some commenters have mentioned about their wives, I don't always wear one because I have other bauble options that men don't always have, such as bracelets, rings, necklaces, etc. Sometimes my rings clash with watches pretty badly. As a general rule, women's clothing is way WAY more diverse in patterns, colors, and styles than men's clothing. It's easier for men to find a few watches to go with everything in their closet than it is for us.

For me, a watch is functional jewelry that needs to coordinate with my outfit/other jewelry in some way, which is why I have many in different colors, finishes, and styles. Also, unlike men, who wear special watches when they are going to formal events, it would look strange if I were wearing a watch to a wedding. Watches sometimes have the effect of making a woman's outfit more casual/daytime rather than more dressy/evening. Think of a wedding dress...ever seen someone wearing a watch with one on?

Sometimes I stack bracelets and watches as below (don't hate on my Michele quartz...it's very sentimental to me), which is fun sometimes and allows my watches to be more versatile.

Ok. I've been envisioning some hairy-legged guy who resembles Jacques Cousteau all this time when encountering your posts so your photograph "snuck" up on me.

You make a good point. And, I have been guilty of assuming much when making selections of apparel or other gifts I thought my wife would like. Once bought her a trendy pair of designer jeans from a boutique which I had financed. I was patronizing my bank customer and thought to please Mrs. noelekal with this fancy pair of jeans. She didn't care for them at all and suggested I return them. I'm sorry to say that I became "pooch-mouthed" at this suggestion and suggested that I might instead toss them over the rail at the Brazos River bridge on my way to work next morning.

She ended up wearing them a few times before they were donated away and I determined to avoid choosing clothes for her in future.

I prefer people to think that I'm a hairy Jacques Cousteau! Don't let the photo change your mental imagery! I will get mansplained less if people think of me as my avatar. Sadly my life is much more boring than Jacques.

And yeah, you get points for trying to be nice and buying something for her, but it does just end up being stressful to have to wear things out of guilt. I know that pooch face all too well. When it comes to occasion gifts, I have a deal with my husband now where I tell him what it is that I'm getting for Christmas/birthday, and then get it with the understanding that I will tell other people that he got it for me so he gets the credit and I don't have to deal with his sad face.

My wife wore this lovely 1946 Girard-Perregaux Seahawk until I bought her an Watch last Christmas. This thread reminds that I need to sell that old watch.

My wife hates watches and jewlery. Apart from engagement ring, wedding ring and loop earings

I once tried to offer her a lady Rolex OP (since she only knows 3 brands: Rolex, Omega, and Seiko, and she thinks Rolex is the most expensive one) but she refused and said "buy me another diamond ring instead". Less expense for me then.

my wife wears mostly fashion watches all the time...I have to be more careful showing her some of my small case watches because she tends to like them ...so much that these tend to never find their way to my box! 🙁

My wife doesn't wear a watch, though she wears a lot of silver bracelets and has since I've known her. I bought her a nice women's Tag Heuer several years ago, and she has her late mother's Rolex Datejust (from the early 90's), but she doesn't like to wear a watch for some reason.

My wife is not a huge watch fan but I got her a DJ and we've started looking at watches together. She now has her eye on a Cartier Ronde Solo. It's nice that she is starting to enjoy watches.

Her favorite happens to be here today because the battery died. She's tired of the mechanical watches and about to be annoyed because I haven't gotten around to changing out the battery in it.

my wife ignores the lovely Longines I bought her since she stole one of my RR grade Bulova quartz watches.... tragic really.

I'm a taker of those mechanical 1940s Longines your wives are not wearing and not so crazy about !! 😁
Save the watch from neglect - and buy your wife something they will choose and love with the proceeds or a lovely romantic experience, nice dinner, week end getaway, etc 😉

Especially that tiny gold sei tacche @noelekal !!

Dear @Wallardy, so nice to be joined by a lovely lady watch nerd -- no "mansplaining" to be feared here I can assure you.
And I should thank you for helping indirectly my attempts to convince these kind gentlemen to relieve their wives of any cumbersome watch gifts 😁

I listed these earlier, but neglected to include a photo. Here is a group shot of my wife's favorite "nice" watches. She also has a white baby G-shock that she like to wear around town, but I couldn't find it to include in the photo. 😀

Sorry @Syrte ...you wouldn't want it... its a modern piece, and whats worse, its quartz. With Frau Fritz its all about function, she teaches kindergarten, so a watch must be tough as well as easily read for teaching young folk. thats why she fell in love with the RR Bulova, its big clear face.

All right @Fritz, I'll give up on your wive's possessions -- and will hope Ms. @noelekal's is secretly praying to be rid of one of hers. 😁

My better half loves her Breitling Top Time

Looks fantastic on her wrist 👍

PS - @Canuck sorry for the thread hijack : as you may have understood, I wear watches 😉
