Still have yet to see an R1S in person, but I see a T almost daily (there has got to be at least a couple in my neighborhood).
I still love both of them lol.

I am driving to Belgium next week to test drive this beast. I have my order ready and spec as I want. BMW motor and designed and built by the people with G wagon experience. Fully loaded is sub $100k and I can have it this summer.

No GPS, No electrical fluffy things and a cockpit like an aircraft.

Sales guy told me that the new Defender has 350 chips/processors/magic electrical things where as the Grenadier has 35.

You can order for North America already.

Edit: any BOSCH approved shop can service the car.

Does Ineos have delivery dates yet?
Mate of mine is expecting delivery by next month, he got the early bird launch price about $20k lower than mine for ordering last year.

I told them I want chassis serial 3000+ and apparently thats going to be by this summer.

There may be delays but I am ready to accept that as I will keep driving what I have until then and then trade it in.

My god, they seem proud of having beam axles. They need to join the 21st century.

I LOOOVVVEEEE (at least the idea) of the Grenadier.
Not QUITE available to order in the US yet. I believe you can put down a deposit, but US pricing has yet to be announced as well.
That may be a solid contender for when my wife is done with the Bronco lol.
She loves the old Defenders and Range Rover County's, so this would be right up her alley but with a slightly modern twist.

They have some major advantages off road. Not so much good for on road comfort.

I drove a G wagon for years until 2020 and can confirm you feel every bump in the road. I found it comforting and grew so accustomed to the sensation that when I drove my better half's Audi I was never at ease as I had no sensation other than floating on air. You drove the G with your arse is the best way I can explain it 😀

I live in Solihull. LR are a standing joke regarding build quality. The vehicles, however, are always great while they run.

I spent some time with an Ineos employee recently on a ski holiday and I was impressed with what he imparted. They have taken the defender design and updated the bits that were always crap namely the engines and electrics and kept the bits the owners loved. As long as they can find some useless slackers to throw them together they will really capture what LR was about until they got airs and graces. If they get it wrong and add build quality and reliability all the better for owners!

ps I should point out the latest Defender is assembled in Slovakia not Solihull and is rated very highly.

Smartville is a purpose-built factory complex in Hambach, France, established in 1994 as a joint venture of Daimler-Benz and the Swiss watch manufacturer Swatch to produce the Smart car. In 2020 the plant was 100% owned by Daimler AG and was taken over by INEOS for production of the INEOS Grenadier 4x4.

Smart factory for Smart business. The most modern automotive production plant in Europe staffed by trained Mercedes employees with a new lease on life is really encouraging.

I wanted to like the new Defenders a lot more than I do.
I've seen a few around town with a non-factory wheel/tire combo and it helped.
But overall the car is just meh. I still like the idea of them but....
I'd honestly rather have a new Bronco and some cash left over lol!
Haaaaah. I randomly stumbled across this thread while searching for something else.
This post did NOT age well. Here is me trading in the Bronco for a Defender 🤣

Hah ok fair enough. The main reason - the family (mainly my wife).
So the Bronco was hers so to speak - as is the Defender. It is the family hauler that she uses to drive the two kids (ages 5 and 8) around in every day.
We both loved the Bronco for what it was. But it was always on the smaller side in terms if interior space.
As our kids got older - our needs changed in what we wanted - which was more space and a smoother and quieter ride.
With the kids and their activities - we've found ourselves in the car a lot more and for longer distances and times.
The (factory) wheel and suspension setup we had on the Bronco made it loud and it drove like a truck.
And there is noting wrong with that - as long as you know what you are getting into and can live with that.
The interior was also not very refined - but again, not really the point of the Bronco. You could literally wash it out with a hose.
But again, space was a big "issue". There were times we wished we had a 3rd row or at least the benefit of having more cargo space when that 3rd row was folded down. The kids are still in car seats, and they were pretty crammed in the back seats. Also - no air vents in the back for them. And in Florida it gets pretty hot in the summers and the car would take a while to cool down - and I'd hear about it lol.
So at the end of the day there was nothing "wrong" with the Bronco. It just no longer suited us. I would have loved to have kept it - but that didn't make much sense.
We are not hard core off roaders either. So while the Bronco would likely blow the Defender out of the water (or mud) in that category - it was still overkill for the trails we'd frequent.
I never even used the front locker and never really NEEDED the rear. I just liked knowing that I had them.
The Defender is still plenty capable for the random weekends we head into the woods. All while being much more of a pleasant driving experience for all of us.
The Bronco had the "cool factor". The Defender has the "nice" factor. It would be like going from your college apartment, to your first townhouse in the 'burbs. Both have their purposes and pros vs cons. But one will always be "better" than the other - for reasons.

I ended up not getting the LR when they asked for 20k once my allotment came up. I had a preorder on the Rivian R1S Quad and got that instead with pre order pricing and 7,500 tax credit.

I had an Ineos preorder but while emotionally still want it the 12 mpg is a killer.

20k on the R1S and still love the boring 860 hp beast. Did a 1,000 mile road trip and back with it.

@Archer did you get the Ineos?

My bet is that Rivian will still be going strong when we check this thread in another 4 years.

Congrats.

I still like the Rivian. And I still have the Scout SUV on "order'.
But I'm not sure my wife is a good candidate for an EV. She can't even manage to plug her phone in before bed.
Her car would be dead all the time.

Thanks everyone for updating this thread with firsthand experiences. As someone who truly needs a reliable and capable off-road vehicle, I'm always on the alert for something that can replace my 5th generation 4Runner.

Now that the 6th generation 4Runner is available, I have a real decision to make, and the lack of a lie-flat back seat is a problem for me, because I have always used the cargo area to sleep at trailheads, to get an early start the next day. With the 6-gen 4Runner, I would need to set up my tent at the trailhead. Of course, every other vehicle option is the same, but it's no longer an advantage for the 4Runner.

The Defender would work for me, but I don't know if I could tolerate the position of the spare tire, and the 4-door (with the tire) will actually not fit in my garage. The 2-door Defender is an option, but you know ... it only has two doors. The Rivian would be great around town, and it's certainly capable enough off-road. But I am concerned about range and reliability, especially when going into very remote parts of my state. My friend had a problem with the electric drive train on his one-year-old Rivian, and he was stranded with no cell phone access. I am also considering the Landcruiser, but it's a non-plug-in hybrid, which just seems like the worst of both worlds, it's also expensive and slightly less capable than the 4Runner. Great looking vehicle, though, my wife got one. The 4Runner is still available with the conventional ICE drive train.

So at the moment, there is no ideal option for me, and I may continue to use my 5-gen 4Runner, although I really don't want to drive a high mileage vehicle, but the cargo area of the new generation just really pisses me off. TBH, the third generation 4Runner was my favorite vehicle ever, it has been down hill since then for me.

Oh dang I had to look that up (about the 6G 4-Runner) and that IS bad.
I know for the Bronco, people will build (or buy) platforms that will level it out and even provide some storage underneath the platform.
Not necessarily ideal, but a solution that definitely can have a benefit as storage solution as well.
With as popular as overlanding has become - I wouldn't be surprised if a solution for the 6G 4-Runner won't be out soon.
I'd honestly be more surprised if there wasn't already one hah.
A lot of people seem to just opt for the roof top tents though.
