Great work, and thanks for sharing.
I have been researching tools and methods for straps these past weeks (for once I did not just jump straight in) so very happy to come accross your thread here. Very impressive. Even skimming through the 8 pages it is easily seen how much you have improved, especially your stitching. I'm tossing up whether to buy one of those cheap kits on EBay, or to buy better quality tools, one at a time from a reputable retailer. I want to make sure I am going to stick to it.
I bought a strap around 8 years back from either here or another watch forum that was made from "Boots that trod the mud of the Somme in WWI" which you can see pictured below. It was a shame that the leather split where it was bent to accomodate the Buckle. 2nd pic. Hence it hardly ever got used.
This thread also reminded me of a strap seller from Asia on EBay. His straps were predominately made of strange exotic skins, not really my style. His reply to a Negative Feedback reply of "Fake" was... "No one fakes chicken skin!" 😁 I thought that hilarious.
I've bookmarked this thread. Thanks again.

I think it was @STANDY who made a key fob out of an old watch strap, maybe you can salvage a piece of that cool leather too. There will be enough for a fob or to make some zipper pulls for a favourite jacket or backpack...

Choco Zenith reporting for duty - with my new lovely super badass strap by @Duracuir1 👍

Thank you so much dear @Duracuir1 !
The weathered texture and blue thread are so perfect!!

And the super small size worked perfectly too!
Now I have to figure out which cause will get this donation.... the needs are so pervasive. It might go to Doctors without Borders.
So an update on this, while I’m quite sure I’ll end up giving to Doctors without borders too, I’ve made two contributions in honor of this strap,
-one to Wikipedia which is providing excellent free information to all and which is begging for help because most people it seems aren’t prepared to help finance ventures which seek to provide quality information, as if it were a given;
- two to UNICEF because they’re just helping so many families worldwide on everything.

I made my first strap of 2021 and delivered it to my jeweller and close friend. He had asked for the buckle piece to be extra long and wanted 18mm lug width. It should have been 19 mm minimum.

He strapped it on and is happy with it “as is”.

Then he handed me an old custom made gold watch. I would describe it as a cocktail watch if there is such a thing. All gold, including the bracelet.

My wife tried it on and it fits perfectly. She is keeping it. The watch does not work. And her eyes are not as they used to be - she thinks I am still good looking!

She will wear it Andy Warhol style.

My friend offered me the watch for free, in exchange for a pile of leather straps that I have made for him over the years.

He simply wanted to save it from the crucible. Me too. If we could only know the story behind it.

He agreed to weigh the gold and I will give him market value.

That little thing is awesome!! Sounds like a project for Doug 😉

The watch does not work.
What movement is in this watch?
Quite a beautiful watch, and even non working it makes for a beautiful bracelet.

For my ducari I already mentioned what I donated but I feel the need to relate this story. A lot of the people I work with attend this one soup-kitchen that serves three meals a day, two on weekends. I’m always curious so I asked them how the food was. Surprisingly most of them gave the place two thumbs up or a couple Michelin stars. I looked a little deeper to see if I could donate a few hours labour. I went a Sunday a few weeks ago. Worked with an 84 year old guy who does 6-7 days a week volunteering. He’s a retired government employee. I think he’s been doing it for 10 years.(at least 10 years his story was so amazing I can’t remember it all) He volunteered there the entire covid lockdown as well. Said he was a widower and if something happened he wanted to go out doing something good. Pretty amazing guy. They even did a write up on him in the paper. I don’t know if you can compare that to any financial donation. There are some amazing people out there he is definitely one of them. I hope to see him again but I usually do the places right around me and I only do this once a month or so really I’m just trying to shave time off of what I think will be an extended stay in purgatory

The movement is likely an A Schild 1051 as shown here.

Most recent strap (Above) for a OF member. Never worn Gruen said to be given to team members of the Toronto Maple Leafs (Hockey) the last time they won the Stanley Cup. If I recall it was about 33mm. The original NATO strap had blue and white stripes. My jeweller wanted a one piece strap. Watch worked perfectly. I suggested he have it serviced.

Holster for a colleague’s Glock. I used prop guns to shape my leather to a perfect fit,

“Change” pouches for my jeweller’s door greeters.

Just for fun after seeing Talking Watches with Mr. Moki Martin.

Repaired an old JB Champion strap. It needed one lug piece and a bit of glue and stitches.

Window seat. I used a full side of natural leather. It is already changing colour. It will eventually darken in the sun.

Nearing retirement. Then I will devote more time to this hobby!

It is fun! I have shaped leather for several pistol holsters, phones, and even a Bible. First you need to cover the item in plastic food wrap.

Then you soak your leather in warm water and shape away. I use clamps to secure until dry. I did not want to cover my friend’s Bible in food wrap so I used my wife’s favorite tin box.

I look forward to seeing your first leather covered pocket watch converted for the wrist. (On @Canuck pocket watch thread). Our friend the Mad Dog might even buy one!
