A pretentious, snobby, old fashioned guide to choosing a strap

Good thread. I’ll say my one of three rules is the strap should never be the focus of the watch. If it is, it’s not complimenting the watch. Second, exotic skins still need to look good and wear well. Third, a strap should always be a bit longer and never shorter. Too many are too short and don’t have a proper keeper.

2nd GS 43999 on black lizard

Classic! And what a beautiful watch. I have a 57GS, late dial variation and it's one of my favorites. I wear mine on a dark brown alligator strap, and I find it pairs perfectly with a polo shirt.

Given the sorry state of polo shirts these days, methinks it would be a good idea to start a parallel thread on grading/choosing polo shirts.

When it comes to polo shirts, the best choice is not to wear one of the bloody awful things…..unless of course you’re playing polo.

I must take issue with the "black with tuxedo, dark brown if not" for dress watches.

The band should match or compliment your shoes. End of story.
And I would add your belt as well.

The word "polo" is never mentioned. We call them golf shirts.

Even worse!
Since when was golfing attire the high point in sartorial elegance?

Polo shirts are made of cotton. Golf shirts are synthetic.

It doesn’t really matter what the hideous things are made of…….they’re still ghastly

But they're OK if you wear the collar turned up right?

Took awhile but I think I found the perfect strap for this 18k yellow gold Hamilton.

That strap is gorgeous and compliments the x watch well. What skin is it made from? Can you share the source of the strap?

It's too small for the lugs!
I like the strap, as I noted but our grader is right, it doesn't fit the lugs.
