I really think Mercedes should've kept Bottas on the 2 stop strategy and have him push Vettel to make his tires go off once Kimi had to drop out. That way his tires would've been way worse or he would've been forced to pit while keeping Lewis on the 1 stop in their back pocket. There was no way they were under threat from any other car.

I don’t see 23 seconds pit delta let alone 35 seconds for the win in that strat. Bottas would have gotten third. Merc had the better strategy, Ferrari took a huge risk but their data didn’t see the 35 seconds to pull off a pit.

Merc takes the stand drivers are equal. They are not going to tank a driver for the sake of another esp this early in the season. If it had been reversed I promise you Ferrari would have pitted Kimi.

Here in Modena people are pretty pleased. Has the Ferari won again?

Yes they did by the slimmest of margin on race pace merit. One of the mechanics had his leg snapped in half due to an unsafe release on Kimi. Looked awful and I suggest not to find any videos showing this in slow motion.

Always thought they should add a covering canopy as on a fighter jet. Both for protection and better aerodynamics.
But I guess the rules and tradition states that F1 should be open top cars.
It was experimented with years ago both in F1 and F2 but was not a success. The drivers didn’t like it, too much reflection and visibility problems when the canopy became dirty, (they would have needed washer bottles and wipers). It was never really a serious proposition for F1, however a car with a canopy was raced in F2 for a short period, from memory it was called the Proteus, it also had a plywood monocoque following the original Marcos which had a ply chassis. It had some success for a short period but was dropped fairly quickly.

I know KMag does not have the best reputation but as a HAAS fan I was happy to see him finish 5th.
And honestly I kinda like the guy hah. Right or wrong I had a good laugh at his "suck my ba***, mate" comment to Hulkenberg after a race last season.

And of course I'm happy that Vettel was able to hang on to his first place spot on those old tires.
Lucky for him, it was Bottas behind him because if it was Hamilton it may have ended differently.

I actually like KMag's brash zero f*ck's given attitude also. Max sort of has the same attitude but keeps crashing so it doesn't work for him.

I really hoped that he would have made that pass on Hamilton stick...but like you said, keeps crashing.
Such bad luck for both Red Bull's last season and so far this season.

I think the move on Hamilton was great, if there was no contact I think people would have loved it. But he only just didn’t leave enough space, so bummer

He goes for gaps, that's for sure!
It just seems like more often than not, it does not work out for him (and sometimes the person he is passing too).
But I like him as well, and I hope that he has a long future in F1.

Hehe, I liked the race, a million times better than Australia.

Really thought Bottas was going to overtake Vettel at the end but I think that was a clear example that Bottas just is not a world champion in the making. I think he made 1 or 2 moves in the last 3/4 laps? Both moves were at the wrong time, once a half move into turn 1 where he could have easily set himself up for turn 3. Oh and he was a second quicker per lap so in my opinion, he should have overtaken Vettel.

I disagree if he had not retired he would have received a 5 second if not a stop and go for that move.

Max has a history of crashing, contacting, or getting contacted. He really needs to mature more as a driver if he's going to win the WDC. He can't keep throwing away points going for bold moves. It's fun and exciting when he makes it stick but the risk isn't worth it a lot of the times.

I've been watching this onboard (originally posted on reddit). It's starting to look more like just a racing incident to me. Max did divebomb but he went wide probably from taking the wrong line. Ham didn't "back off" as much as he claimed he did but doesn't seem like he had any ill intent as it's clear he wouldn't put his championship contention in danger just to stop someone from gaining a position on him at the beginning of a race. I think they're both exaggerating their case a bit

Had a long discussion on this with a former Porsche NA factory race team engineer and 2 guys with a lot of track experience and we all read it the same way. There is a fine line between aggressive and reckless, we all agreed it was reckless. Max had more braking potential and did not need to cut outside to avoid Alonso. Hamilton did not have much more braking potential there and Max knew Hamilton was there either ignoring Hamilton or trying to force him off track. Max diving out into Hamilton’s line forced Hamilton off the track needlessly. All of us rewatched it last night and independently came to the same conclusion that if had not taken damage he would have received a 5 second if not 10 second penalty.

He did not have to take that line he choose that line recklessly. Hamilton’s post race comment was deserved. Note none of us like Hamilton in the discussion.

It's hard to give Max the benefit of the doubt since this has happened multiple times in his short F1 career. Not like this wasn't the first time he was overly aggressive even though he wasn't punished.

Funny how no hammy fanbois comment on him calling Max a D-head caught on camera before the podium. 🙄

I mentioned it but I’m not a Hamilton fan. FYI Vettle defended that comment in the post race journalism meeting.
