Yard sale find

I recently found this at a yard sale. I know enough about vintage watches to know that this was definitely worth a dollar I paid for it. I’ve tested the case and it is definitely 18 karat gold. The number on the inside of the back is 511181. The movement is marked with 22782882. Any help dating and possibly a value would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I rescue old watches like this one from getting scrapped for its melt value. This one still runs, a little fast but I’m sure it’s an easy fix for what I paid for it.

You asked for the value. Listed for sale as is, unserviced for decades likely, it’s worth scrap. After a full service which will cost between 200-700, it will be worth a bit over scrap. You’re unlikely to increase the value by the amount a service costs unless you know someone who’ll do it very cheaply.

It’s not what collectors like to admit but there isn’t a large demand for small vintage ladies watches.

Thank you for the advise. Value is secondary to information regarding the style, date, things of this nature. I collect these watches not to turn a profit but to save a bit of history. The value only helps with insurance in case of theft.

Ok. I gave advice on value as that what you asked for.

The 22m serial dates it to around ‘65. As you know it’s solid gold as confirmed by the 750 stamp inside the case back. The dial appears original and the manually wound movement will almost certainly need a service but once complete it should give decades of reliable wear.

Thankyou. Sorry if I was rude. The information is much appreciated.

No need to apologise, my boys woke me up at 5 so I’m grumpy as hell today!

Nice mid-60s ladies watch. As mentioned above, there isn't really a collectible market for these so the value is indeed dominated by the gold. The good news is that if you have the watch serviced, you may still be able to get your money back because of the gold case. The bad news is that most buyers are likely to scrap it. However, it would be a lovely gift for someone you know.

I’ve given a few like this to my wife. If she likes it, then I pay to have it serviced (which costs far more than any “value” the watch has but I won’t give her an unreliable watch). If she is ho-hum about it, then it goes into the parts/scrap bin.

See if someone in your family enthusiastically likes it. If so, then it’s worth the service and a nice real reptile strap. Some women find these watches very charming- a real throwback to an era where women wore dainty jewelry. But that is really a matter of personal taste. If you get it serviced and try to surprise someone with it, you may be disappointed when it stays in a drawer for another 30 years.

I am always on the lookout for cocktail watches. cheap.

The may not sell for a lot. They do seem to sell for more than I am currently willing to waste spend at the moment. I tend to get outbid by a few dollars. I could double my bids. Which would make me feel I am paying too much. I also have to decide between getting watches parts or tools.

Most are probably destined for the fiery furnace. I do no value gold so it is annoying that such things are destroyed, just because of an artificial demand for a common metal.

Personally the cocktail watches are underrated. There are so many variations. The designs may have had a shelf life of a few months or even only a fortnight or so. Many are probably one and done.

The same thing probably happens to a lot of the bangles what are used for that special occasion then either put away, sold, or saved for someone else in the family.

Ladies gold omega cocktail watches are not collected or worn anymore so what are you meant to do with them?

One could try and corner the market.

I used to have a box at the opera. Was always fun to wear a vintage beauty.

Do not really have much opportunity these days to wear the little cocktail watches. On the other hand sometimes collections are not about use. I knew someone who would collect rusted bent nails and screws. Perhaps they were a safety expert. People collect bottle caps or trading cards. Those do not have much use either.

The best use though was when I visited the omega factory. I wore 10 omega watches 5 on each wrist. Several of them were the cocktail watches. One of the straps broke, and they gave me a new strap.

I have actually move up in size in the last year to 10mm automatics. I added about 5 more of those as the SS or plated cases are less likely to be scrapped.

It always amazes me how small a mechanical watch can be.

Edit: I can service the watch myself. Part of why I have so many watches.

@Nickn, you are all correct the market is quite limited, however some of us have ladies watches which are not anywhere near death, or considered by their owners with your level of contempt.

Also please note you need 200 posts of real contributions to the forum before you can offer watches for sale here.

Love the Longines @Syrte, especially the Salmon dial with the subseconds, and the cushion case, and . . .

Thank you, I like them all, to be honest - and yes, I only have one Omega actually. 😜
