Contempt?
I have no contempt for ladies watches
I can appreciate them as much as there bigger brothers
But it’s still the case gold cased ladies omega rarely sell for more then there scrap value
Sorry if this offends you but it’s true just look on eBay
I sold one last week for £84 after fees I got around £70
It would have scraped for £84!
So what should I do ? lose money on every one I sell?
Would you?

You said “ladies watches are the kiss of death”.

Maybe what you meant was, “ladies watches are a pain in the rear for someone like me who buys watches on flea markets in order to turn a profit by selling them on Ebay.”

It’s all a matter of view point.
Never mind though. 🙄

PS just make sure you don’t scrap one of these if you find one. It certainly won’t sell for 600 or 900 euros/ USD or GBP, but it’s worth much more than its scrap value.

EBay Asking prices have nothing to do with true values so why post ?
Look at completed prices
I always try and sell a gold watch before resorting to scraping the case
Perhaps if people like you bought gold cased omegas their prices might go higher then their scrap value
Or do you think I should stop buying them if there’s a profit to be made
Antiques are my business
Or do you not believe in business and a free market
May I ask how you provide for your family?

Seriously though if more ladies collected watches we wouldn’t be in the sad situation where the metal value dictated the price of these watches

Thank you, I like them all, to be honest - and yes, I only have one Omega actually.

The Omega is quite nice as well.

It was a generous gift from a forum member who liked to call himself squirrel. So I suspect he accepts being described as “nutty”- this was one of the spare nuts. 😉

I buy lots of these I always try them on eBay before scrapping
unless boxed and papers they never sell for more then scrap

Ladies watches are the kiss of death
Pm me if you want to buy some

Or, for some of us, they're the chance to buy a good watch for an affordable price (we don't all have an unlimited budget) and be able to wear it without any hang-ups. Some of us ladies don't like wearing bling-encrusted dinner plates on our wrists. In my case, it's not just a matter of taste, but of practicality. It's simply far easier to tuck a smaller watch up one's sleeve and out of the way of power tools, cats, camera straps etc.

Fashion and perception is to blame, but whatever goes around, comes around. It invariably does.

At the end of the day, I think it's sad that so many gold and silver-cased watches end up being scrapped. Because once they're gone, that's it, and some of the ladies' ones are real little works of art.

I totally agree it is a shame
I recently had a clear out finding nearly 44lb or 20kg of ladies watches in various boxes
Mostly low to mid range all mechanical I sent them to my local auction house £100 including fees!!!
That worked out to 15 cents 11p each
The buyer has started listing them on eBay where I see if they selli it’s for there opening bid of 99p

Erk! That's a LOT of watches... 😲 And given that a packet of crisps is around 85p in Tesco, it kind of puts it into perspective.

The cheapest watch I've bought on the 'bay set me back £4.50 *including* postage for an almost mint 1977 Citizen automatic complete with its original stainless steel bracelet. I can't remember exactly how much I paid for the watch (I was the only bidder) but the postage was by far the biggest chunk of that £4.50.

Even a cheap unjewelled Timex is a nifty little piece of engineering.

Yes I think there was 800 watches I thought they would sell for at least £1 each was quite shocked when I saw the result
That’s auctions for you
I have several clearance firms who save any watch for me
Ones just found this in a clearance

I never count the Shipping and handling. That is the Angels share (Or the Devils mold.)

85p for a packet of crisps? Seems low these days. Must be one of the small ones with 3 or 4 'tato chips in them. The mid sized ones I get are more like 5 bucks.

I sold a bunch of stuff last fall on some 99cent auctions. Most of it was only suitable for art projects. I keep meaning to list more stuff. With the current economy it seems better to sit on it. Most I have had for 30 years. Probably should have dumped it in the steampunk era. On the other hand I would have just used the cash flow to gather other watches or electronics. Probably do just as well listing some of the old microprocessors, resistors, capacitors, etc (Do the brits still call them condensers? ) and such. I found some vacuum tubes stuffed in the back of the drawer. (I think the brits call these valves.)

The makers are now into 3d printers and lasercut robot frames. More individual projects than group efforts.

I found out we have a fiber laser. No one seems to know how to use it.

(Now It is time to mow the lawn. I wonder if I should wear my speedy?)

Edit: perhaps I might find some pipe organ parts when I mow the lawn. I tend to dump the sawdust on the lawn, so on occasion there are bent rusted screws and nails in it. I do not think through the missing engraved speedmaster back (or any of the other missing casebacks or bezels is in the yard.) More likely they got donated in a boxed lot of misc stuff to the salvation army.

Yeah, tell me about it. Can be so pot luck sometimes, though in my case it's as a buyer and not a seller. Either way, you can be left scratching your head.

Is that real, or what? Have to admit I know diddly squat about those, but if it's pukka, nice find. 👍

Depends what I'm buying. Shipping on small items tends to be much of a muchness anyway. Unless you're looking at boxes of old motor racing magazines or newspapers, and then the shipping really does come into the equation. Newsprint is kind of heavy, with predictable consequences when it comes to postage...

I meant the 40g grab bags of crisps you get in the supermarket lunch deals along with a sandwich and drink - the cost of them is a good yardstick to compare the price of other things with. The tiddly multipack bags are a bit stingy, but just enough to make a sneaky crisp sandwich. 😉 (cheese & onion is the best for that, IMHO)

My Gradus is the watch I usually wear to do any sort of gardening, but the clasp on its very nice Montal bracelet snapped day before yesterday. 🙁

I was joking about the pipe organ parts. But I did find the missing console parts in a box of leather behind the lawnmower. I have been looking for them for about a month. About the same time I gave the xylophone away which is when I re-stacked those boxes.

I do not even consider selling the pipe organ stuff as shipping is a nightmare. These days it is hard to even give it away. The weight is not a problem the pipes even though they are tin lead are surprisingly light. The material is really bulky and takes up a lot of space

I have a lot of books and ephemera. When I moved one of the movers asked it I had lead in the boxes. I said yes. When I showed them the box of small pipes, it was one of the lightest boxes I had.

Pipe organs have been made with paper pipes. (There is one in Venice.) I have an old book on the subject. There are warnings that the paper pipes may crush the wind chest. Paper is really dense wood and clay.

Sold my box of Bulova watches cheap. The new owner can have the fun of waiting weeks and weeks for a 99c auction to sell. One really has to sell hundreds of items if not thousands of items to get any feedback. Only people who can be accountants are good at things like that.

I think the brand of crisps I like is called 'tatoes. What I really miss is British candy. It is next to impossible to find fresh. Cadbury really cracked down on the imports. Too bad the Mars family can not get along. Some of the highest fines imaginable are for smuggling candy. Especially the eggs with a toy inside. Tens of thousands of dollars if you are caught.

Used to get wine gums at the drug store (Do they still use the name Apothecary?) These things I think are like Tescos smaller than a super market that also sells meat and produce, but larger than a gas (petrol) station. Such stores tend to sell a bit of everything. And the never have what you really want. American candy is the worst. Too many lawsuits. Guess we are all supposed to smoke and chew tobacco.

We threw the expired pub onions that were in the fridge out this morning. I kept the kamala olives though.

Books is good 😀

My best friend owns a bookshop. Which is good (I get mates rates) but is also bad (I ran out of shelf space years ago). Whoops. 😟

Have to confess, I'm not a fan of Cadbury's chocolate. It's way too sweet, especially the creme eggs. My favourite indulgence is Green & Black's 50% cocoa solids with the candied ginger, with their milk chocolate flavoured with Cornish sea salt a close second. I've no idea if you can get either in the US.
