I remember seeing Stomp when they were guests on an Australian TV show that we had audience tickets for back around 1990 ("The Big Gig", for any Aussies old enough to remember). They were a lot less polished and produced back then.
Thinking of the Big Gig reminded me of this little gem, which I also had the pleasure of seeing live from the audience. Most folks only know of the Doug Anthony Allstars (DAAS) as an anarchic comedy trio, but they were also quite accomplished musicians in their own right. See for yourself:
And a couple more. The Big Gig was a great platform for (then) relatively unknown acts - pity it only lasted a couple of years. The Auld Tirangle: The War Song: And one last number, this time from one of their later concerts:
Furious Angels - Rob Dougan. does the James Bond thingy an awful lot. it's like he was auditioning for a career as a 007 soundtrack writer.
My daughter and I had a bubble gun dance party to a couple of Michael Jackson tunes, and then I put the below on to chill her out before she left for the gym (day care) with my wife. It's still playing and the apartment is very quiet after the girls left.
I’m just back home after a trip to Cincinnati, Ohio to visit my parents. While in Cincinnati, I stopped by Everybody’s Records, which I have done since 1980 when living in the area for 2 years. Then and now, it’s a good place to go for used and new vinyl. It’s enjoyable to flip through the albums, sample a few on the store turntable and leave with records of artists I knew little of prior to walking into the store. This time, another customer named Steve and I struck up a 45 minute conversation across the isles and record stacks about jazz and blues music and musicians as we continued flipping through albums. One record Steve pulled out was of Red Garland. “This is one you’ll like. He was a nimble pianist in the Miles Davis’s mid-fifties quintet.” With that he put it on the turntable, gave me a fist bump as he said goodbye and exited Everybody’s Records. Now thousands of miles away, I’m listening to a Prestige album of Red Garland’s “Saying Something” that’s spinning on my turntable. Great music. Thanks Steve!
