Beatles White Album.
At Abbey Road Studios (The Beatles) recorded, first, on Two, then four, and later, eight track machines. Compared to the almost limitless digital tracks available these days.
I like to put the cd in the car stereo, Pan balance to the left and listen to part of a song on 2 tracks, then pan balance to the right and listen to the other 2 tracks.
Amazing how 'stripped down and raw it sounds just by listening to half the mix. Mistakes and bum notes all clearly audible. When you listen carefully to the actual playing of the instruments, some of it is even a little on the sloppy side. It's all in there including fret buzzes on guitars.
Pan the balance back to the middle and suddenly you have 'The Beatles sound' again.
How the hell did they create that whole sound bouncing stuff down on analogue, four, and eight track, machines.
This little bit of 'in car' amusement only works on older recordings. Once we got past 4 and 8 tracks it all gets too busy to be able to pick stuff out. If somebody could invent technology that could separate a complete 32 track mix into individual tracks, that could be listened to in isolation, it would be fascinating.
