I have sort of a hodgepodge system that I got for cheap, or great deals. Stuff from 70s, 80s, 2010s and the 2020s...

Amp is the Adcom GFA 5500 (Mosfet) I had it recapped with select caps (after doing some research). A guy I met at CES (he was a vendor for Anthem) that was a husband of somebody I worked with sold me his amp for $100 but it costs $100 to have it shipped from where he lives in CA. He threw in the preamp for free, the Adcom GTP 500.

Speakers are from a little known company called SLS (out of St Louis?) and they are phenomenal. I'm not even sure they are in business anymore. They make a great speaker with planar gold ribbon drivers. I have the towers and the sub woofer (not currently hooked up). Anyway, the company I do work for did some marketing video for this company and they sent a set of speakers for photos and video. I also went to their manufacturing facility and did a video piece on that process. Fascinating. I ended getting the speakers and Sub (and a smaller surround set up for my home theater) for free, as trade for some overtime work instead of money. It was a no brainer (people can pay me in Hi Fi gear and watches, just don't tell my wife- Ha!)

My phono pre was another great deal... they are the Sutherland Duo - so duo mono pres, a friend in the industry hooked me up at 25% cost- crazy deal. Probably a bit overkill for my set up, but they do make a difference.

Turntable - an old Dual I got off craigslist for $75. I put a Denon cart on it and it sounds better than I can imagine.

I also have on a shelf in my basement two other turntables that I plan to clean up and set up...well I have been meaning to for a few years now, just never get around to it... a1960s Empire 398 (I'll mate with Denon 103) and a 1970s Lenco L75 that came with a Shure cart. I bet both of these will best my Dual, so I don't know what I'm waiting for...

Anyway, Jazz is definitely my favorite music, and that's what my collection mostly consists of...I have some Music Matter releases, as well as Impex - Thelonious Monk Staright No Chaser on Impex sounds incredible as does Monk's Dream.

Thanks for introducing me to the idea of Thad Jones in your post. I googled him and it seems very hard to find his records. A quick itunes check proves that I will love the music. Right up my alley.... just a challenge to find. All part of the fun.

Great looking gear.

I wanted pure vintage tubed gear when I started collecting and was able to hear different peoples systems and read all over the web.

LaScala speakers
McIntosh MC 30 x 2 amps
McIntosh C-22 pre
Sony SACD 9000ES Modwright so I have a tube line stage and an outboard tubed power this is my main digital playback.
OPPO factory modded 83 Special Edition so I can play my Blue Rays, DVD-A, CD-r, plus SACD
Technics 1210M5G- Ortofon Black MM
My TT actually is technically in another room in IKEA bookcases in that it points north and all the gear points south separated by the blackout curtain liners in listening room and regular curtains facing into the next ( computer) room.(last picture).

open concept was taken to further isolate TT.

vintage tubes, it was fun collecting them over the years and rolling them to dial in the sound.

Ideal for jazz like the ones I posted here throughout this pandemic. Classic Rock, too..... and Blues. 😁 Throw in some Bob Wills and Willie Nelson..... I can’t complain.

Damn! That's a serious set up. Mine was more of an after thought on a budget and what I could get for a bargain and make work. I haven't really put any effort into it, but if I did and had the budget, I would go to an all tube set up as well. One thing about my MOSFET amp is they say it's sort of tube sound, so that's good. I can't complain really. I know it can get better...much better... but I honestly just cant imagine it, that's how good I think my modest little system sounds...mostly to do with those speakers. I'd love to hear what a set up likes your sounds like and I would probably be completely changed.

One of my other passions is electric guitars and tube amps, so I'm not a stranger to tubes... but I just haven't gone that way with my stereo...yet.

Well, it took some time to gather all this, but I had a vision, it just took 25 years to get to the point where everything came together, along with a pandemic to keep me on task....and mostly at home.

Luckily, I was given some great advice years ago, buy great sounding software(vinyl, digital) all along so when you get "there" you can enjoy it without the hefty acquisition price. All the great jazz reissues on MMJ and all the others just happened to be about the time I was getting back into vinyl, circa 2005-6. I held off listening to much/most of my new vinyl until I bought this Technics new in 2009. I was also lucky that I could hear this in our weekly music group and knew this was the jazz era(Hard Bop) for me.

So, after thought or plan, enjoy the music and as you can improve a piece, improve it. And as you can add a cable here or there or an ultrasonic cleaner for your vinyl or some vintage tubes or tube gear, your enjoyment will also increase.

Another great thing about Blue Note records is that they incorporate an art gallery, with Reid Miles’ covers and associated artwork.
