Some early Elvis this afternoon.... ELVIS - "Sun Days 1954-1955" - (NEW sound & edit) - TSOE 2019 - YouTube
I have sort of a hodgepodge system that I got for cheap, or great deals. Stuff from 70s, 80s, 2010s and the 2020s... Amp is the Adcom GFA 5500 (Mosfet) I had it recapped with select caps (after doing some research). A guy I met at CES (he was a vendor for Anthem) that was a husband of somebody I worked with sold me his amp for $100 but it costs $100 to have it shipped from where he lives in CA. He threw in the preamp for free, the Adcom GTP 500. Speakers are from a little known company called SLS (out of St Louis?) and they are phenomenal. I'm not even sure they are in business anymore. They make a great speaker with planar gold ribbon drivers. I have the towers and the sub woofer (not currently hooked up). Anyway, the company I do work for did some marketing video for this company and they sent a set of speakers for photos and video. I also went to their manufacturing facility and did a video piece on that process. Fascinating. I ended getting the speakers and Sub (and a smaller surround set up for my home theater) for free, as trade for some overtime work instead of money. It was a no brainer (people can pay me in Hi Fi gear and watches, just don't tell my wife- Ha!) My phono pre was another great deal... they are the Sutherland Duo - so duo mono pres, a friend in the industry hooked me up at 25% cost- crazy deal. Probably a bit overkill for my set up, but they do make a difference. Turntable - an old Dual I got off craigslist for $75. I put a Denon cart on it and it sounds better than I can imagine. I also have on a shelf in my basement two other turntables that I plan to clean up and set up...well I have been meaning to for a few years now, just never get around to it... a1960s Empire 398 (I'll mate with Denon 103) and a 1970s Lenco L75 that came with a Shure cart. I bet both of these will best my Dual, so I don't know what I'm waiting for... Anyway, Jazz is definitely my favorite music, and that's what my collection mostly consists of...I have some Music Matter releases, as well as Impex - Thelonious Monk Staright No Chaser on Impex sounds incredible as does Monk's Dream. Thanks for introducing me to the idea of Thad Jones in your post. I googled him and it seems very hard to find his records. A quick itunes check proves that I will love the music. Right up my alley.... just a challenge to find. All part of the fun.
