why was the ebay/value thread locked without explanation?

I always read it as ‘planet of the something or other’, whatever, the mix of cases makes it tough to scan.

does no one really know why the thread was removed ?

is it possible people were using it to push their own ebay listings ?

otherwise whether one liked the thread or not i could not figure what rule was broken ? the threads i have seen shut down have seemed to cross red lines ?

^ Likewise, and most of the sellers are long time ebay sellers listed so I doubt that they just now got wind of Omega Forums and started shilling their junk here.

The obvious danger of all the "recommended eBay" threads is that someone might shill their own listing, which is not permitted outside of the private sales forum. I don't know if that was happening or not. It did happen in the eBay thread in the Longines sub-forum recently, and some posts were removed.
Hi Everyone...

I was not following this thread... so I cant comment for the rest of the MoD team....

In any relationship you need three things..
1) Trust
2) Communication
and
3) Common Sense.

And in this case wear communication is lacking , you have to rely on Trust and Common sense.

I am now watching this thread with interest.

With respect to @pIoNeErOfThEnILe I understand you invest a lot of time and effort... But the way your acting is in poor form. This is a community and everyone sees everything....

Bill, Thank you for posting this. I have been active here for 8+ years, observed a fair amount of drama from members and I have always appreciated the way the mods have handled it. So when you mentioned the three items needed in a relationship, that really resonated with me. I fully agree, and where, at times communication is lacking/delayed, certainly a proven record of trust and common sense goes far...which is what I have experienced here.

And here are my favorite three watches (and if you ask me tomorrow, it could very well be three different ones).

Thanks for responding Bill. As some of us were really enjoying the “bargain” eBay thread, could you please inquire with your colleagues as to why they felt it necessary to close the thread. As has been said in this thread by several other long term members, it’s not to question why, but to understand if there was a misstep as to not repeat it in the future.
Thanks for your time and efforts,
James

Mob hate and discord sewn here? Rioting?

Project much? Does that chip on your shoulder ever become a nuisance for you?

55 of 163 posts, or about 34% of total were made by the original poster so it must have been a pet thread.

I may not recognize good value on a vintage watch if I dropped it on my big toe, but I have no need to be nannied by a Forum thread about what is, or is not a good value for a watch. The thread cheapened the tone of Omega Forums by acting as a yet another clearinghouse for Ebay and other vintage watch marketing sites, detracting from the Forum's own watch sales sub forums by competing with the efforts of Forum members selling there.

It's a petulant display of immaturity on the part of the original poster to publicly upbraid moderators or to exhibit outrage toward other Forum members who disagree with him.
What a load of vindictive bollocks.

I followed the thread with some interest, but IMO at least half of those posted were not good deals and the suggestions of "I would like it to be.... price" seemed a bit pointless, same goes for the "get on the buzzer" to negotiate a better price suggestions. There were also at least one of two Frankens which you need to be careful of. Sure you may be buying cheap but I think you need to be careful recommending stuff without doing some research. People could buy on recommendation without realising what they're getting into and for alot of people a Franken has no value at all.

I did comment at one point about one of the sellers having alot of Frankens in his other items, I was just trying to be helpful to other members(I know the OP didn't like me saying it suggesting these are cheap watches so what do you expect or along those lines) so hope I didn't play a part with that comment in the thread being locked. I very much liked the idea of the thread and did something similar some time back, it's nice to share affordable deals that perhaps you aren't in the situation to buy yourself. I do think there comes an element of responsibility with the recommends though.

Anyway I'll be interested to read if we get an official response here.

It seems like a lot of the strife people have with the thread was the title including the word "deals". There are many other brand-specific eBay threads that have the same other issues people are calling out here (franken watches, bad sellers, weird prices, etc ) but they don't seem to get locked.

If the title were simple changed to something like "Vintage divers found on ebay" maybe it would be OK? Like the UG one, it's just "UG watches on eBay".

The same questions could apply there. Do we know if any of our members are shilling their own wares in that thread? Is anyone concerned with the worry of someone here buying a bad watch because they found the link on this forum?

Just food for thought. I liked the thread also. Responses could be handled better, but that's its own can of worms.

Original thread is unlocked again, it was never deleted as we didn't have any issue with it per se, but several of the recommended watches were suspiciously not worth buying, and there was a concern that there had been promoting of one's own products in that thread, something that has happened before in other recommended threads and led to those members being warned and/or banned for dishonesty. The title has also been changed to as we don't want dealers linking their websites just auction listings although trademe, gumtree, christies etc is fine in addition to ebay.

Have a nice weekend 👍

Am I the only one who feels disappointed by the calm reasonable answer. This thread seemed to be building drama and then 28 hours later it just seems like much adieu about nothing. A bit anti-climactic if you tell me.
🤦

Seriously, thanks @dsio for the explaination and the reasonable perspective.

I think the originator of this thread has taken his leave of us. Not been seen since he started this.

Maybe he's just cooling off for a bit.

I think because your post was a request like a WTB which is out of context for the spirit of the thread

There has been a recent clamp down on drive by WTB posts and you may have fallen victim to this even though with that post count you are perfectly entitled to post one (in the right place). The lack of an Avatar pic though does at first glance suggest noob. Sort it out lol.
