Being dumb.
1. What does that mean?
2. Is that a rhetorical question?

Cannot be that cheap right? Sounds fishy if it is. Something may have gone wrong.

The John Pye no date two liner Sub 14060 went for £3,400 (+commission so £4,216) - I did view it today, it looked nice, but I felt I may be better to spend more, and get an older, more special sub. It will also giive me more time to take in more information, and as has been suggested, handle more examples.

Which watch was Mark020 referring to that is just £3k?

Might be able to find a matte 16800. I still see nice ones occasionally that aren't overpriced.

16800 matte. approx 4k sterling should get you something in pretty good shape with no box and papers.

Thanks - good suggestion - looks a fantastic watch - is it likely to be an investment piece as well - or should I pay a bit more to get something that has a bit more rarety about it eg "Meters first" - or doesnt that make much difference?

n.b There is this 16800 on ebay - seems a lot more than the figure yousuggested, but looks like its in great condition?

that is not mint 😗, take some more time to do research regarding the watch you want to buy. do not be trigger happy. look at the condition of watch, compare it to others, look at the lug holes, look at the lines of the watch, check everything. know what polishing can do to a rolex case. learn to pick apart good polishing jobs and awful polishing jobs. look at the crown guards too. people have spent months looking and waiting before the right one comes along.

OK - I think I have narrowed it down with all your help to finding a Matte Dial 16800 in good condition - I love the look of them, I like the date function, and now need to do the research. Price wise they look to be about the right kind of budget - but I do want to make sure the one I find is all original, unpolished, and correct.
Is there a reference worth looking at that I could go to?

I had same question in my mind early this year. But after some research, I went for 1987 5513 wg gloss dial. I just love the history and watch case of 5513. 16800's case and bezel just feels different and dont have that vintage feel. I also dont have the money for a 5513 matte dial....so....thats my choice. 😜

Beautiful watch.
I did actually prefer the look of no dates, cleaner looking lines, and that's why I did consider a meters first 5513.
But I know that I do like having the functionality of the date.
I think I have pretty much decided on the 16800 matte dial. I think for me also having the Sapphire crystal will make it more wearable.

I have found one that I think might be nice - haven't seen it ion the flesh - any thoughts on this:

7,248,XXX dating from 1981, with service documentation from Rolex UK
I think the insert in a service one - is it worth waiting for one with the original insert - or do they rarely if never come up - or is it accepted that they do get replaced?
And has it been over polished?

Hi all,

I have looked at this watch today (the same as the one above).

Some issues are the pearl looks inconsistent with the hands. and the end link appears to have the wrong number?

Anyone have any other thoughts on if this is a good one or should I keep waiting?

Or there is this one, which was from another dealer - any thoughts on which is better?

I like this one, as it seems to have a better match of colour, pearl, hands etc. They say it has been lightly polished, but I still am not sure if thats normal, and if this has been over-polished.

And also, can anyone explain what you should look for regarding Chamfers - should they be there, or, as someone told me, they were made without them, but added when a watch is serviced?

Thanks again to anyone who doesn't mind helping.

And on a different note - one other that did take my fancy was a 168000 - pumpkin colour - at £4500 asking.
(I think I am beginning to confuse myself!!)

This isn't a bad price for a 168000. Any more pics? What's the state of the bracelet?

These are rare and unusual references and clean up nicely. Not quite vintage but certainly modern classics. I'm enjoying mine...
