Where are all the Alaska Projects...?...

I just "regret" when diving into which white dial Speedy's to add 1,5 years ago for many weeks and nightly hours (which was fun), it boiled down to either an Alaska or a Mitsukoshi. I decided on a re-dail Mitsukoshi (which I love dearly since) but passed on an Alaska as well which was offered @ 9k USD (new in box). Damn should have been bolder ha ha.... Ah well..

That’s a great looking watch. I’d be very happy with that decision if it was me!

I just took a look at ebay to see if any APs have sold in recent months. None. But those listed for sale range from 20 to 35K. Does anyone know of a sale over 20K USD to date?

We are at the end of an inflated market where there has been huge Quantitative Easing ...
Been hearing this for 5+ years. One day it will actually come true, and people who have been saying this for 5 years will say "See, I told you!" And the people who ignored them for the last 5 years and increased there wealth substantially will be chuckling. If you know when exactly the top of the market is (as you imply you are doing right now) you are probably super rich, and probably just toy with OF for your own enjoyment while behind the scenes admiring your collection of top tier watches (not these inexpensive Omega things) 😉

Yeah, whenever a market finally crashes those who bought at the top lose out, and sometimes big. But if it climbs for another year or two those who buy right now may still do okay. I'm not sure how one can call those who by at the top 'idiots' because the top is not actually known until the decline is underway. Judging the top is only ever in hindsight.

It would be great, in my eyes, for the the watch market to crash so I have a chance again to buy some models I wish I had picked up a few years back before their prices skyrocket. But I don't wish those who bought their dream watch at a high price to suffer loses just for my personal gain. Flippers are another story though...

There's no loss of gain unless you sell, so no matter what prices do, I'll be fine. Just don't sell, and these concerns go away quickly. 😀

The watch market is not going to crash unless the economy bottoms in every way. The last two severe market events did not lower prices at all on vintage and luxury watches. There is no reason to think prices will be going down. There are no indicators to substantiate claims of that kind. The only thing that would cause a downturn would be the kind of generational change that cause other collectibles to drop in popularity, such as cars like Model Ts or Hopalong Cassidy toys. When that generation of children reached old age, they stopped buying, and later generations had no interest, but Speedmasters have proven they have an appeal that goes beyond one or two generations. There are thousands of 20, 30, 40 yr old collectors entering the market, and this may be true for many other vintage watches. Prices will hold or move upward for nice old watches. There will be no crash in prices.

Gosh, reminds me of a very active thread that used to be around here somewhere …

I'd like to see those who constantly predict market crashes include concrete dates for their predictions. If you want to be a prophet, have the courage to say more than "uhhhh sometime in the future the market will tank." Be like those tv preachers who all went balls to the wall and said GOD told them Trump would win in 2020 only to be humiliated when he lost. So lets see those specific predictions.

Timing is everything

I have a 100 million mark note I inherited from my grandfather. That might have gotten him a loaf of bread when he was 23. Now there are no marks and the euro is worth more than the dollar.

A lot of it comes down to how lucky you are in where your 75 years are in the cycle.

I “found” an Alaska Project last week on a wrist at the new OB in San Francisco. I offered to trade my 145.022-69 for it, no-go. 😉

No picture, I always feel a bit awkward asking to take a wrist shot of someone I don’t know well. It was the first I have ever seen out in the wild.

It’s neat, I wish I had one, but holding it I do know why aesthetically it was a pass for many originally. The sub dials are just a bit awkward and it is really, really a bright white in person. But yes knowing what I do now, I could live with it… 🙄

I wonder how much whiter it is than Snoopy 2. Most likely appears brighter due to lack of black accents all over the dial (hence the dial being more sterile).

Might look less sterile with a bit of colored tritium…

(Or maybe 90s toffee tritium, but this white step dial is beautiful…)

As for the registers, some might argue that’s part of the charm…I personally don’t like where the value is headed (or where it is currently)…‘investment’ kinda ruins watches imho.

It seems that watches have become just another thing for those who have some spare bucks, to put you money into when trying to escape the inflation. I'd say we will see some nice peaks ahead 😉
As for Alaska - the only thing that speaks to me in this one is the white dial. I have a soft spot for it 😀 i dont really like the rest of Alaska detail.

In a world economy plagued by all manner of unrest prices continue to move upward. Quote that for posterity, too.

A recent eBay sale for an Alaska project was at 25k usd. That would be plus tax and other fees. They will continue to go up.

Well,

instead of an Alaska Project, you can get very close with the Snoopy and the new 'allwhite' NASA NATO from Omega 😎

... but: The Snoopy2 is even more expensive than the Alaska 😝

No Alaska today, but with a white dial... waiting patiently for my 2008 Alaska 😎

Not bad, not bad at all sir. Having seen a pic of your collection an Alaska will fit nicely.
