Here's the story of my first Omega, a Seamaster Pro 2551.80 purchased while I was on holiday in Dubai in 2005:
I was in the market for a mechanical watch as I'd had enough of quartz watches that would die on me unexpectedly when the battery ran out. I'd only had one other mechanical watch previously, a Seiko 5 gifted to me by my grandfather which kept time poorly (-30 to -45 secs a day).
I wanted a watch rugged enough for water sports, yet smart enough to wear out to dinner. I also wanted a chronometer as I wanted the most accurate mechanical watch possible. This SMP ticked all the boxes for me and I still have it. Getting close to a 25% discount was the icing on the cake.
I didn't know much about watches or Omegas at the time so was completely unaware of their other offerings or about the links to James Bond and Prince William. All I knew was that my father had an Omega and he swore by it, so if it's good enough for him then it's good enough for me! 😁
First Omega? An engagement present from the fiancée (now ex-wife) in the form of a Seamaster quartz. That’d be 1982?Gave to my eldest boy a few years back before I caught the watch bug.
First Omega I bought for myself would be a Chronostop Driver c.1966/7, about two years ago. Still one of my favourites although I’ve taken to the f300’s since and have a small flotilla of those.
My first was a cushion cased Omega Seamaster with white silver dial that I got on special in 1980 at a jewellers in the City, I paid around $150AUD from memory as it was half priced.
