First time posting in the Modern Omega Watch discussion with a conundrum...

Been posting quite a bit in the vintage Omega discussions, but I have a relevant conundrum that crosses both discussions regarding modern Omega and vintage Omega collecting.

So I've been deep diving and asking a lot of questions, like some posters may know, and even messaging some regarding what to look out for when buying vintage Speedies, i.e. 105.012-66 and a 105.002. And I finally found my first 105.012 in good condition with a 1039 bracelet. So far I've been wearing my 105.012-66 at least three times a week and it feels great. I love the tritium lume, DON bezel with history, and an unpolished but sharp 60 year old case. There is nothing like the connection I feel when I wear my vintage Speedy and read stories about it online. And my MWO book hasn't even arrived yet!

But this isn't my first Moonwatch. I have a modern Speedmaster 1863 "Sapphire Sandwich" on an older 1171 bracelet, complete with the collectible "Big Box" with all the goodies (loupe, nato strap, Nasa velcro, Hippocampus medallion, etc.). It was one of my first "serious" watches I bought during my early watch collecting days. And now it sits unworn for almost 4 months now.

So I recently listed it on FB marketplace for a local buyer and I got a few offers. Then one offer came closest to my ask and we had a serious discussion regarding condition, etc. and agreed on a price to meet up this weekend for the sale. So as I cleaned and prepped my "Sapphire Sandwich" for their new owner, the gleam of the modern polished lugs and facets and the sturdy brushed steel bracelet caught my eye again. I started to research the "Sapphire Sandwich" and the 1171 bracelet with the 633 end links, and re-read all the research I poured into this watch before. Then I took a look at the beautifully decorated movement through the clean exhibition case back and I put it on again. It felt "weighty". Heavier than the 105.012 and the flimsy 1039 and it felt larger too, and I must say looks dressier as well. I felt regret for letting it go. Then...I realized that I haven't let it go. The sale is this weekend and I still have my "Sapphire Sandwich". But would I ever wear it again?

Seriously want to hear thoughts from OF peeps who have collected a long time and "upgraded" to other watches. I do feel like a nice 105.012 is an upgrade to a modern 1861. I already feel somewhat regret for selling my Omega Seamaster 300 2500 during the pandemic, but then again the price I got was not too bad. But then I just bought more watches. When do you let go?

The handy thing about the Cal 1863 Sapphire Sandwich is that there are always more of them out there, and most significantly, the new version of the sapphire sandwich with Cal 3861 has a much better crystal without the milky edges and a far better constructed bracelet, so while there may be some question as to whether a standard 3861 Moonwatch is better than the 1861, the sapphire version improved a lot between generations.

Thanks for bringing that up Ash. That's another possibility...that I let my 1863 go for the nice 3861 Sapphire + an additional $1500-$2000. However, it looks like the 3861 Sapphire look is very similar to the 105.012...down to the DON bezel, applied logo, step dial, drop end chrono hand, and smaller lug to lug case. The bracelet doesn't matter that much to me at all. So wouldn't someone just wear a 105.012 instead for the look. I know the movement has some major improvements from the 1863 to the 3861, but there are some reports that the finishing and look of the 1863 is actually nicer than the more machine made 3861. I probably wouldn't think the upgrade is worth it for more money.

I guess the question is more if I would ever go back to wearing a modern Speedy after wearing vintage ones. And you might be implying that the 3861 Sapphire is worth wearing more than my 1863.
