So I agree, a GMT or world time watch is super helpful

Some cities in Italy are famous for their strong-armed theft from tourists. I’ve been told by local Neopolitans more than once to leave my expensive watch at home. I ignored the first warning, but after hearing it twice more I’ve decided to take their advice. I wear a Seiko automatic now when doing the tourist thing in Italy.

I don't need or want to wear a watch while on vacation. Unless I missed it earlier in the thread, I appear to be the only one. Vacation is for relaxing and, if overseas, BUYING watches.

Just wear what you love and enjoy it!

All my vacations in the past 25 years [*] have been in France watching Le Tour. As designated navigator with the detailed route+times from the organisers and my own maps timing is vital to find a decent viewing spot 200km from our base before the police close the roads. Although I've navigated on car rallies my driver has not driven on one, and my sense of where we can get to by when has to take a severe speed hit.

BTW, if you like street parties take in the Tour de France if you possibly can. The bikes & riders go by in a whooooosh, and that's it. Plus du vin? But the partying is the thing, and then scramble to find a bar with a TV when the roads re-open to see the finish.

Only vintage watch I wear while travelling

where your absolute favorite watch, enjoy it, and feel great wearing it. Just stay in the safe areas ad out of dark alleys! No diff than traveling around the US. I go all over our nation, you can get robbed anywhere. Just avoid the more likely places.

Independently verified by my parents who had a rental place near Dinan a few years ago and had a blast watching one of the stages with the locals.

On our trip to Orlando last October I took my Ti Planet Ocean 9300 and a Casio ProTrek solar power triple sensor. I'll likely do the same this coming October when we go back to Universal Orlando plus a Caribbean cruise. I usually only travel with two watches in addition to my Apple Watch, and my watches will spend some time getting wet on this trip.

I bring the ProTrek as my under-the-radar watch, but mostly because it has an altimeter that lets me know when the airplane cabin pressure is low enough to turn on my oxygen (I often need it above 7500-8000 feet since my left lung shut down). And the ProTrek also has world time for traveling.

Previously my Rolex GMT BLNR or Explorer II might have been my luxury sport watch to go with the ProTrek, but both had to go away to help me get my Pepsi GMT 216710. I'm too concerned to bring my new Pepsi GMT because it stands out and screams "Mug Me". Same with my Rolex Submariner Hulk which is fairly flashy. My SubC no date might not be too flashy, but I'd miss the date and chronograph function that I use a lot on trips, and it doesn't have a jumping hour hand or GMT function for crossing time-zones.

I'd consider taking my Speedy X-33 Solar Impulse for the GMT and chronograph function, but I worry about the water resistance on a beach trip. I bought it March 2016 and when it got it's 1st battery service in Jan 2018 it already needed new seals. So I'm worried that I'm already 18 months out from the new seals and our trip to the Caribbean isn't for another 4 1/2 months.

Meanwhile, my Ti Planet Ocean 9300 was regulated by Omega in Jan 2017 where it passed its pressure test - then it passed its pressure test again last summer and just 3 weeks ago. I can time things with it using both the bezel and the chronograph, and it has a jumping hour hand for when I cross time-zones. It's comfortable with the Ti 1151 adjustable clasp, and eye catching with the grey metal and muted blue dial/bezel that don't stand out too much. Being within 2 time zones of home I won't need a GMT function.

I wore my SRP on my last trip as it's the only modern waterproof watch I have. Would love a modern gmt for the next one.

But seriously, if you're going to get mugged it's most likely not because of the watch you wear (though the result of course is the same regardless of the robber's motive).

This is a topical one for me - I will be leaving for vacation shortly. I was thinking of buying and using an Apple Watch, but the hassle of having to put my phone in airplane mode, adjust the time and synch the watch to the new time puts me off. I generaly like to adjust my watch to local time as soon as I'm in the air.

Proof that 'old fashioned' mechanical speedy > digital!

My favorite watch to wear when traveling for pleasure is my Seiko SPB077, pictured below with some sort of washed out Instagram filter while on Longboat Key a few weeks ago. It's durable, tough, and takes a number of different nato patterns really well, including my favored goldfinger or MI6 pattern. When traveling for work, the watch depends on the attire I'm obligated to wear.
