What Causes You to Worry?

I don’t mean health… we all fret over that. I mean things that happen during a regular day.

Before I retired, it was watching a pickup truck pull up while I am already fighting with one asshole…

It’s simpler now… for example… I am currently hand stitching some @Walrus pouches as freebies for our Detroit get together.

Things are going well, and suddenly I notice that one of my needles is no longer attached to the thread. I can’t find the damn thing. I looked under stuff, because that’s where whatever we drop always ends up. No luck.

It’s a big needle. Did it fall between my belt and jeans? I hope it’s not in my shoe or just poised to stab me… And finally, just as I an about to strip, I find it on the floor about five feet away. I am sure some of you in other parts of the world have things that « bug » you. Especially if you live near the desert or jungle.

Do share.

Being late is probably the only thing that causes me stress. It doesn't matter how significant or insignificant, if I have said I will be somewhere at a certain time, I need to be on time or early. Connected to this is having to rush somewhere. I hate it and it makes me proper pissed off.
I think it is my dad's fault, he is late for everything, never made a doctor's or dentist appointment on time as a kid, always had to run to make it to school on time.

Missing something on a Scope of Work, or making a small mistake early on that could snowball in to a monster problem when we are at a critical point of a project are my biggest worries. I can oversimplify what it is that I do when looking at it from a high level, but when you dive deep in to the weeds of my projects, there are thousands of little pieces that need to come together in proper sequence, and discovering a problem late in the game just causes chaos/scramble/problem solving when we least have time to do it.

So, that's my worry wart...and that's why I'm so obsessive about double, triple, and quadruple checking everything before kicking off the build phase of our projects. I stress the "7P's" with all stakeholders in hopes of mitigating worry when it comes time to perform.

7P's = Prior Planning and Preparation Prevent Piss Poor Performance 👍

Worry is a funny thing. If you read the Bible it’s full of teachings how worry does no good. Many ancient Chinese sayings teach on the uselessness of worry. Yet it is something I struggle with daily. I can find myself worrying about the littlest things.

Sometimes I can catch myself and realize things will happen as they will and no man has increased his stature a single cubit with worry. Most of the time I dismiss all that I’ve read and waste my time worrying.

Assholes that don’t know how to drive. Everybody thinks they are a good driver. They are not.
“where all the women are strong, all the men are good-looking, and all the children are above average.”

Virtually everything even though it's worthless and asinine.

Now I got the "Worry" song from Anchors Away sung by Gene Kelly and Jerry Mouse as an earworm.
Incredible piece of animation.

I live in Florida. I worry about being hit by an uninsured driver who flees after the accident every time I get behind the wheel. It has happened to my wife twice in the last 12 years.

Supposedly up to 25% of drivers on the road here don’t have insurance (or a valid license).

And guess whose insurance just went up again.

My daughters. Are they happy, will they be able to support themselves in their old age, will they be able to buy a house, will the world burn up in their lifetime.

And will my Gallet ever come back from the watchmaker.

Fuel and weather.

When the computer says we’re going to land with less than 5,000 pounds of fuel and the weather is [or is going to be] craptastic at the airport, I worry.

I worry about many things. Some important, some not.

The only example I can think of right now is when I'm changing a strap or bracelet on a watch, and the damn spring bar goes flying off into la-la-land

I worry that the next lotto draw will be stolen from me by someone who gets the numbers right.

Paper or plastic? It keeps me up nights. 😁 Seriously, I worry a lot about global warming. Not so much for myself, but for future generations. I remember very well what winters were like when I was growing up (I still live in the same area of the Mid-Atlantic region of the US) and they are much milder now with very little snow. Summers are blisteringly hot. I believe in the science, but my eyes and common sense confirm it. I've travelled enough to see glaciers melting, barrier islands disappearing, and wildfires, floods, droughts, hurricanes and tornados all becoming more common and increasingly severe. This is no joke, folks, and we better wake up soon and do something about it before it's too late. We're arrogant enough to think that the human race can't go the way of the dinosaurs. We're wrong.

ice caps melting and living below sea level. Will I be needing a dinghy to get to my 3rd floor apartment?!

I have had some truly dreadful stuff in my life, worrying before and after made zero difference.
I have learnt, ‘don’t worry, be happy’, or as happy as you can be!

@gbesq above hits the nail on the head, we each need to do something otherwise nothing changes.
Recycle, Re-use, Reduce.

Get a rain butt, compost kitchen and garden waste, leave the car & walk a bit more. Small actions from many people does make a difference.

Yes, I used to think it was all hippy liberal nonsense too.
