The greatest British sci-fi writer was Douglas Adams.

You'll get no argument (or little) from me about that. Can't forget about Wells, Clarke, and Moorcock!

And maybe Brunner?

I live in Maine and didn't know this author wrote fiction that takes place in Maine until I started reading it:

Dead by Dawn

by Paul Doiron. He has a series featuring the character Mike Bowditch. It was a very good read. Finished it in about three hours.

Another recommendation:

Project Hail Mary

by Andy Weir who wrote The Martian. This was a super-fun book that they are apparently making into a movie. Took a little more than four hours for me to read.

I'm just starting Paradise-1 by David Wellington.

Agreed!

Regarding your earlier comment about The Golden Compass--- My high school sweetheart let me borrow her copy and gave me a copy of the Subtle Knife when The Amber Spyglass came out. She said "you should read these, you and I kinda remind me of Will and Lyra."

Not long after that, we parted ways.... 😵‍💫 (Ironic, but it definitely worked out for the best!)

I wasn't the biggest fan of the movie, so I've never watched the show/series. How was it? Worth watching? This is yet another Fantasy series that is going to be a must read to my children.

I unfortunately watched the Golden Compass movie first which forever coloured my view of the characters but having said that the movie was pretty faithful to the books with in the confines of book to screen transition IE not perfect but well within the spirit of the book and some of the actor choices were inspired ( better than the BBC series).
I also have the audio book version ( read by the author)
The books themselves are the best of course.

yes, compared to movies like jumper and Eragon, The Golden Compass was far from a bad adoption. But there's no doubt that it is a much more lively and interesting book than it was a movie.

I think I have the same audiobook, I listened to it with my wife years ago when we flew to Hawaii.

I think the movie suffered from being skewed to a younger audience compared to the books and really no foul in that as after all it is primarily about kids and Hollywood needs to make a profit to ensure more movies in the pipeline.

One of the very big upsides in my opinion is that much like the Harry Potter films it has inspired kids ( of all ages ) to pick up books, gain new skill sets and deeper insights in the literary world and the wider horizons that brings.

Another of the advantages of the books is that does give a deeper understanding of the religious implications that thwarted the movie franchise from progressing to further films and it provides a juxtaposition to current religious thinking and norms if you are into that sort of thing.

Personally, I prefer Clarke...I am still waiting for someone to make Rendezvous with Rama into a movie...

Who am I to disagree?

To keep with the thread, just finished HOLLY by Stephen King. Great character, fun read. Less supernatural and more on human creepiness side for Mr King.

I remember thinking about that book again when the Oumuamua intersellar space object passed through the solar system.

Fantastic book! I'm afraid that a movie would probably be a let down though.

How did you like this? I'm a big fan of unscripted Chris Harris on his various podcast and youtube things but I'm not a fan of hard cover books so I might wait until softcover becomes available

Re-reading the Wool omnibus. I'd recommend the Red Rising series as well. Really smart and will likely become a series/movie franchise.
