Rereading this masterpiece.
McCarthy is one of my all time favorite authors. When I heard of his death I broke out Blood Meridian to read. It's incredible how beautifully he could express such raw violence as he did in that book.

Pretty amazing account of a period at the beginning of the end of the Western Roman Empire by “the last great Roman historian”. It is one of the primary litteratur sources from that part of antiquity but I never actually read it before now.

Got a ways to go but excellent so far. This subject has been extensively researched and his use of diaries, speeches and correspondence from the period make it read as an unfolding event, as opposed to revisiting a well-worn story.

Everything Erik Larson has written is recommended.

His works sound very interesting and reading the Wikipedia on the books and the original written material they do sound substantially different in the execution of characters personalities and other background environments so I think is a wise choice to read the books, probably first.
The series writers are well known and have produced some really tremendous series which are very reflective of their source material, this one doesn't sound like the same approach, will be interested to hear your verdict on it.

I don't normally like books that are written in the 1st person style but this one is a cracker so far.
I've read The Shining and The Stand at least once a year since they were written

Currently reading Earnest Shackletons' account of his journey/shipwreck in Antarctica. What a story! I struggled through the first 4 or 5 chapters and almost gave up. Very glad I didn't. Unbelievable what they went through. If you like adventure books, I don't think you will be disappointed with this book.

I also enjoyed Endurance by her captain, Frank Worsley.

80 years ago... Tripartite Uranium accord
After Belgium delivered Uranium ore from "Belgian Congo" Haut-Katanga province for the "Manhattan Project" and subsequent nuclear weapons, this 1944 treaty between BE, GB and the USA ensuring a flow of "strategic minerals" included Chromite, Copper, Gold, Uranium and Cobalt.
The latter was hugely important for to produce the Iron-Nickle-Cobalt alloy used in jet engines as it was the solution for heat emission in prolonged time running jet engines in e.g. strategic bombers.
Besides the minerals, raw materials and diamonds it's interesting to see the political background and intrigues of the wars in Congo!

2/3 of the way through and it's a good read. Being the sad and pathetic individual I am it's best enjoyed whilst wearing a Speedie.
