I'm sorry but I don't get the point to hide his identity. Like this it puts other at risk and increase the information asymmetry between buyers and the seller. I have no problems dealing with a seller that is a bit shady, as long I know what I'm getting into.

If you don't want this to happen again you should ask more questions prior to spending your money (and get multiple educated answers from other sources) and learn from this experience.

Cheers,

His exact words were "It is running good in that it runs

I tend to agree with @Davidt, in that the phrase "it is not keeping time" does indicate that the watch is not in good mechanical condition. I understand that you were hoping for something better, and the language was ambiguous, but the signs were there in the dealer's language. A new balance staff should not be too expensive, and hopefully this will just be a minor blip. </fingers-crossed>

Hi.
Maybe I missed something here. Your watchmaker feels the watch had not been previously serviced. Is the movement broken or... not running due to old lubricant , soil, etc, etc. ?. If the movement needs a lube and tune ( a 100k mile service) I am not sure you have a legitimate gripe here. The dealer said it would need a service. You may have assumed the service would be a modest one, not a complete disassembly and cleaning.
In these type of situations I think we all hope for the best and plan for the worst.

I just scanned this thread again to see if I missed something. He refunded you half the service cost!. Quit while you are ahead. Oh, and name this dealer. Not to shame, but to allow members to be informed when dealing with him.

Yup, I had the same mindset as you. I thought it would just need an oiling, change of gaskets, new tubes and she's good to go.

Turns out it has a broken balance staff and roller.

I agree with others' sentiments in that you're being way too forgiving and accommodating. You state that you were told that the watch "has not been serviced but it is running." Once you received the watch, it became evident that it doesn't run when the dial is up.

He was flat out negligent is his description to you to the point of being deceitful. Then he acts as if he's doing you a favor by paying 50% of a service, just to get the damn thing to operate, because he's "nice" on a watch you paid a premium to acquire?

Name him and shame him if for no other reason that to help the rest of us avoid this guy.

His IG handle is gisringhausen

Maybe some of you guys have had a good experience with him before but for me, this is the last time I'm buying from him.

Thanks to who responded.

Last year , I had gotten a 16600 from hqmilton (Jacek)
When I received it, the stem broke off and I couldn't wind it at all. I took a video and showed it to Jacek and he immediately apologised. I asked if I could bring to my watch guy and he covered the service, he said definitely 100%. Can't help but to be floored by Jacek's service.

(I understand hqmilton's policy of sending out their watches serviced) so that might be the major difference.

I thought this sort of half assed service was generally frowned upon in collector circles.

The thing is a proper oiling requires a disassembly of the movement. And it would not be normal to do that and not clean all of the parts, check them for damage, etc. I think the seller provided enough info to expect a full service, but maybe not the parts cost for the broken pieces.

Your concept of a "service" is completely at odds with mine, and to do it that way can actually cause more damage than not servicing at all.

It’s heart breaking to hear any news like that.
When a dealer tells me that a watch is running but needs service, I would expect a watch that is at least running. The watch you have is broken to me.

While the dealer is technically not wrong with his description (in terms of purely words), his actions just show dishonesty to me.

Never deal with him again.
