What do you mean by « but the line... »?
That narrow impression on each side running down the length of the strap.

Ah, yes, one italian craftsman from whom I ordered a number of straps called it «rigato a caldo » ie « heat striped ».

I don't think it's near as prevalent in hand than it is in the drawings/illustrations you posted.

I was going to say this one is but not as much as I remembered.

I get why Tom is being so fussy about this- it is all in the details. I am happy for anyone who wants to make straps “in the style of”, but if they are not 1:1 (perhaps better construction that the originals but stylistically 1:1) then they aren’t what is being called for.
I have been in the hunt for 40’s style straps using modern leather like this for years:

I have spoken with several vendors who alway point me to something “similar”, and even had one Italian strap maker do one based on pics I sent him- and it was a lovely strap- but it wasn’t that.

I share the same sentiment. To me, the thick "ronde" edge and pastel colors are part of the charm of those period straps. The thinner reproductions out there are nice, I'm sure, but they just aren't the same.

That edge is the result of a fairly stiff cord wrapped in the leather.

If that's how the edge is made, is it still necessary to use special tooling? I was under the impression that tooling would be needed to form the leather into that round shape, but if that's not actually how it's done, then it may be easier to commission an independent strap maker to make some reproductions?

There might be special 'tooling' (basically molds or clamping forms) in getting everything positioned right at the gluing phase. Also I suspect a standard leather sewing machine foot would not allow stitching that profile (there are all sorts of specialized variants though in specific industries). Is the leather on the originals uncommonly soft?

None of the original straps posted in the last 2 pages look to have been painted post-assembly to me. The original sheen of the thread is still pristine.

Soft? These are decades old. Mostly, but not always.

As for the thread... these are spray-dyed, and they do that after manufacture. Not sure what the original color of the thread is, though.

I'd love to read up on this process. Successfully doing that on leather and thread simultaneously is quite a feat.

It's basically spray-painted after the strap is made.

I've been searching for leather 18mm/19mm box stitched straps in 40's/50's style for ages too....without much success I might add, very, very difficult to find.

Well the strap maker @Rman is referring to is the one I said would make the best possible replica of your gray strap. 😉

Nick Gabarro is a wholesaler who makes straps for some auction houses, dealers and retailers (I think bulang & sons). There is a model on his website that is close to the 50s omega straps. He does bespoke work so I’m sure he could manage a replica and better colours could be used than those shown.

Hello everyone,

I have made an order of 20 straps in three basic brown colors of pigskin in the style mentioned previously. After looking at a few dozen straps of the period in a wonderful collection, I’ve opted for a single bigger strap keeper to complete the authentic look, but it can slide freely it isn’t fixed in place like the old ones.

Two were ordered for larger wrists with first dibs going to Bill. Frankly, he deserves to have one gratis after offering so much to the watch collecting community over the last hundred years.

I know some here have strong opinions and that’s nothing new, should anyone be unhappy with the lack of a ronde edge and cares to organize another group purchase you’re free of course to do so, I may even want one—- just wanted to let you know that the set I’m offering are in progress and will be available in the new year.

If this goes well I’ll probably offer a box-stitched strap design. I have had many made over the years by my friend Matteo. Here is an example in a beautiful textured leather that looks good on practically everything.

Hope everyone is in good health,

Ryan
