That is very cool. I'd have loved to talk to your grandfather.

I've been aboard the Texas quite a few times since 1960 when I was three and ran my head into something while touring it with my parents. I remember wailing about it while standing on deck, but don't remember what it was. Somewhere in my parents' "colored slides" are photos of me perched on one of the main guns.

I've also been on the battleships North Carolina and the Alabama. I like to tour warships whenever possible.

sorry to hijack again...

i went on the hornet with my grandpa and he was on fire "sheets?? bathroom stalls?? this is like luxury hotel!" he was a plankowner of the enterprise too and i guess it was a different experience. in the 80's when they restarted the new jersey, he wanted to interview as he was skilled on the 16". in his 60's they graciously declined.

Hi folks, planning on producing a set of these straps, and talking with my strapping friend about it.

I’ll have more details shortly, and will take custom sizes by PM ONLY IF YOU WANT A SIZE IN IMPERIAL MEASUREMENT. Otherwise I’ll be offering them in MM sizes on the “watch parts and accessories for sale” to be in compliance with the forum rules and post a link in this thread soon.

Working on a leather emboss tool that can be something we all have stamped on the inside of our straps that’s fun and unique, I think you’ll like it.

Be well

I sold most of my original Omega straps and kept the two favourites, not sure if they help. One is certainly a lot more worn than the other and is missing it’s keepers but I just love it’s character, the other one I bought as NOS and although very similar has a tapered end rather than rounded:

It would be interesting to see what can be produced, I would be interested in them subject to quality.

For information, many of the the Europeans supplied straps and designs people have shown here were produced by Kaufmann straps in Germany for Omega. Bulang and Son have worked with them recently on collaborations, including the replica rally straps for speedies.

Kaufmann have dusted off their production equipment for the original styles and are now making them again, I have a couple and I have some of the original ones and they are pretty much identical. You can find them on their website, they are about £120 each but the quality is exemplary.

Hi Tom, from what I understand the quality of the originals wasn’t necessarily very good, I’ve been told by someone who’s dissected one that there was literally paper inside the strap to give it shape.

My maker friend doesn’t have the equipment to produce the “ronde” edge, but they will cost significantly less than B&S, and should be more comfortable, thinner and pliable than the originals.

The idea here is to do a quality machine-stitched strap that’s a nod to the past but not a perfect recreation.

Im completely up for it if we can get them made and I would be very interested. Im a strap addict (I have hundred of NOS straps for less than 30 watches) and am always on the hunt for good quality straps so I am very interested in what you could get made

I have a few of the originals which are nos and wearable and they are superb quality (but you are right bulky etc) but I avoid wearing them as they have survived so long. Kaufmann ones are very good but Kaufmann only really deal with trade and as such aren't easy to deal with as a private customer. Kaufmann ones are also not cheap

I’m sure they’re nice, I have a couple straps from B&S and they are very well made. Don’t love their buckle though, the one offered to us is nicer in my opinion and more “vintagey.” More details to follow.

Not keep on the B&S ones, I find them pricey and not fantastic, I bought mine from Kaufmann direct but as mentioned above not without challenges and heavy on the wallet.

I’m sure we could get both quality and exact reproduction of the original.
To me, the main interest is to have it like it was back in the sixties 😀
