Totally fair question and thanks for asking it @MtV. I’m not put off by the notion of learning about the watches, really just the opposite. I am very interested in learning - my questions are focused on discovering what I can about watches that I find aesthetically pleasing. However, I recognize that I am ignorant of most details in the various vintages - so I present a few of these older watches to the more knowledgeable people in the forum for advice and insight. Like the way a child might ask a parent about something interesting it found in the backyard. Forum members have often pointed out things that I didn’t know to look for and my education grows. I don’t see how that’s a problem.

I am confused (and put off) by the instruction to “slow down and learn from the forum.” It seems to imply that I should just dedicate time to reading through the forum? Like studying for an online class maybe? I have a 60+ hour per week job and a large family - dedicating significant time to reading the forum is outside my time limits.

I am also put off by the notion that it’s offensive or inappropriate to ask a question like: “This is nice, but something seems off about it. Does anyone have an opinion or see something I don’t?” No one has to answer the question if they’re annoyed by it. The name of this section of the forum certainly implies this question should be acceptable.

I only became defensive after the third member piled on to tell me to stop asking questions and get educated. And it is ridiculous to claim you’ve been perfectly polite when you’ve written: “It's not your ignorance that is rubbing people the wrong way, it's your attitude.” If you’ll check the earlier part of this thread, I received a straightforward answer that this watch was a redial and I thanked him for his time. Wish that had been the end of the discussion.

Thanks for the opportunity to discuss @MtV. This was fun.

I’m sorry that you feel you’ve been given a hard time. I don’t think that that was anyone’s intention.

You posted a watch (I gather it was a second watch - no problem there) and it was suggested that you might benefit by checking watches a little more carefully before seeking OF input.

I think you might have conflated the advice because I can’t see any posts suggesting you “slow down and learn from the forum”.

You posted photos of a 284 movement with a 16,***,*** serial number and stated it was a “1969s” watch, and I pointed out it was a 1958 serial number and commented on the warning signs of the dial.

We all have busy lives, families, jobs etc. We have a common interest in watches.

You asked for help, we provided it. I really don’t think your wishing us, “Have a nice day” came across as anything other than unhelpful.

I guess I'll have to clear my end up. Sorry @ShWood if my post seemed elitist or snarky, it was not my intention to make you feel trolled. I simply wrote "slow down" as you had previously posted another example in a different thread that was a redial like the example you posted here. We have had many new members end buying badly redialed watches because they made quick decisions. I'm not implying you'll do the same but I hope to avoid the worst case scenario. I, like many, want every member of this forum to buy an honest watch. We're on your side.

When I mention "research", I also don't imply to go study on this forum for 60 hours a week before you post another watch. All I suggest is taking a few moments to look at threads like this or this. No one expects you to become an expert before buying or posting about a watch. And these threads I linked are reliable gateways to quickly get a grasp and possibly buy a decent watch on eBay.

Lastly, I hope you end up staying. I also hope you find the watch you're looking for and we can move past these hostilities and miscommunications.
