Vintage Omega 284

Good morning,

Okay - thanks everyone for helping me avoid a bad purchase a few days ago. Now I’m looking at this vintage Omega 284 from the 1969s (?) but I’d like a few opinions from the forum. I’ve compared it to other 284s and there seems to be a wide variety of dials for this movement on the web. The numbers and logo look right but I haven’t seen the line dots on any other examples. Is that normal or indicate a refurb? Please share your thoughts and expertise - I’m enjoying the education. Thank you!

Sorry, that should have read “Omega 284 from the 1960s (?)” and “lume dots”…

Vile redial.

Only partially saved by the minty green lume; brush with it and the vile taste will be reduced.

Okay I think I'll speak for most members who will see your post but I think you've got to slow down. The example is a poor redial as you can see they literally marked over the indices. The mint green relume is another giveaway. Take your time on the forums here and learn 😀

Hi @ShWood, you really should 'slow down'as @Nepomuceño suggests.

Apart from the points made in the previous posts in this thread (and probably in your previous enquiry) you’ll have noted from the movement serial number that this watch was made in 1958 not '1969s (?)'.

And, any 63 year old watch with a dial as unmarked as this one really should trigger every suspicion.

Want to beat the Christmas rush ? So far you picked 2 bad watches. Stick to the sales section here. Members would have to be mad, listing something like you picked, here. Vintage watches give joy, but a LOT is to learn. If you find a watch you like here, remember: the pain in paying is once. The joy of looking at it daily and smile, make you forget the first part. Very soon. Good luck !

You know, for a thread titled “Vintage Omega Watches Help, Discussion and Advice” there are some members that are a bit snarky and elitist about the Help, Discussion and Advice part. 😵‍💫 So let’s talk for a minute.

People learn by asking questions - sometimes stupid ones. If I had the time to conduct huge amounts of research, I probably wouldn’t NEED to ask for help on the forum, would I? Here’s the thing I really don’t get: no one is requiring you to respond to questions that you think are improperly researched. I suspect there are a lot of people on this forum who are fans of vintage Omegas but don’t have time to earn a PhD in Omega lore before asking questions. Why not let those people participate on your forum without all the grief?

So on behalf of my people - the novice and part time Omega fans - please just ignore the questions you don’t want to answer. No one needs the research police. We’re not taking the time to join your forum to get trolled for not completing our homework.

Have a nice day. And thanks again to @BlackTalon for just giving a straight, simple answer. Hear hear. 😀

The sales section on the forum is good advice. Thx

Not being snarky here, but I sincerely think you'd be well-served by taking the time to develop a basic level of knowledge so that you can at least screen out the worst watches. Then when you ask questions of the forum, there will be a better chance of success.

Or just stick with the OF sales forum. There is a certain amount of pressure for sellers to be honest, although they can still ask whatever prices they want.

Sigh. I was originally very content with success of my inquiry thanks to @BlackTalon. Simple answer to a simple question.

I sincerely think you'd be well-served by maybe just getting over yourselves. It’s the ratio of four members offering unsolicited advice to one member just giving a simple answer that’s a bit ridiculous. I get it - you all want people like me to go away, because we’re not Omega-savvy enough to ask questions about a WATCH on your forum.

Let me help explain how life works for some of us - and I hope this helps the scandalized Omega snobs that are trying to talk people like me off their website. I see a watch on an online auction that looks nice and doesn’t seem overpriced. I check the caliber against other internet examples and if it doesn’t seem too far off or there’s a lot of variance, I post a question to this forum before taking the step of buying it. Hopefully, some kind and experienced Omega expert will give me some go/no go advice and then I’ll make a final purchase decision. It’s really quite a simple and efficient system. Unfortunately, this forum has a lot of bridges with a lot of trolls underneath. But that’s okay, because there are also enough regular, polite people who give me a straight answer. And life goes on.

Hope this helped. And again, please feel free to ignore/block my posts if it kicks off your acid reflux to respond. Think we’ll both be happier that way. Cheers.

Actually, that's not true. We love new members who truly want to join the community, whether they are experts or newbies. Drive-by posters who just want answers on their terms don't always do as well.

It's not your ignorance that is rubbing people the wrong way, it's your attitude. Instead of understanding that people are trying to help you learn how to fish (instead of just giving you a fish), you double-down on your defensiveness, tell us what is acceptable for us to say, and throw out insults. Sadly, we've seen that type before.

You can either keep it up, or take a step back and try to get a different perspective on this community.

Your response (and the in-group defensive psychology it demonstrates) doesn’t surprise me. Have a nice day.

I'm trying to understand/fix what is going on here. For personal experience (learning making mistakes), the written word can be rude for many reasons, but the first one is that how rude it depends on how we read it and how we interpret the sentences in terms of attitude.
The communication error here, as in many cases, stands everywhere. The OP expects something, who answer expects something else.
The secret is to think three times before write something, keeping in mind where we are, what we're doing here, and, above all, that we don't know each other personally.
Sorry for this intrusion.

Of course, you’re quite right but looking at my earlier response, and that of @Nepomuceño , we were both polite, pleasant, encouraging and helpful and I, for one, was surprised by the response

I know, I know... my reply was a general observation.

I’m completely sure you believe that.

I’m completely sure you believe that.

Please read this question without any negative underlying tone: Are you put off by the concept that learning about the watches might help you find a nice piece in the future? The posts by @Spruce and @Nepomuceño suggesting that and taking it slow do appear kindly spirited to me and I fail to see the offensiveness, hence the question.

Personally, this sounds like a reasonable idea to me and I’m very glad I started the process. 😀
