Ultraman

Hi everyone.
This is my first post. I'm not really a watch person, here's my story and just want to know if I've got what I think I've got.

Back in late 1968 he bought this watch from the army naafi in Dusseldorf. He wore it in his time in the army until he died in 1983.

It was left to me and I wore it to work and out whenever I could. In the mid 90's I damaged the crown and decided to get it sorted. I took it into my local omega dealers and they told me it had to go back to omega themselves. They serviced it, replaced the crown and the crystal. It cost me nearly a months wages to have this done. After that I decided to just to wear it on just on special occasions. I knew it to be quite valuable as it's a pre nasa speedmaster, and I was always very proud of it. But the last time I wore it was about two years ago.

So a couple of days ago a suggested post pops up on the rarest omegas. I have a look though and one looks just like mine. I'm getting it a praised on Friday and was just wondering if the people on here think it is what I think it is.

Can you take a photo that’s perfectly straight on, that shows where the hand nds relative to the markings on the dial. It’s a bit hard to tell but it might be too short to be an ultraman.

Thirdly - where are you getting it appraised? It's unlikely any high street jeweller or contemporary jeweller would be able to assess and value it as a potential Ultraman

Sorry trying to use my crappy phone. It's dark here and no natural light.

It's a friend of a friend who deals in antique watches, tbh I'd like him to take the back off so I can check the serial numbers

Get an EoA and you'll know.
Sounds like you haven't worn it in a while, so what's another month.
Plus it will help you when you're ready to sell the watch.

Just be careful. There are antique (pocket) watches and there are vintage wristwatches, with a huge number of sub categories in each.

Make sure he knows what he's doing as a scratch on the caseback may deduct thousands.

I'm just taking my first steps with this. And I am concerned that along the way someone will try to rip me off.

I think I'm not going to have a good idea until I check the serial numbers.

Bingo 👍

Its a lovely piece none-the-less should the SN's not tie up, however I have a feeling they will.
I don't think there is anybody who is not here that can appraise that watch for you.
All we need are more pics and a movement number.
Once you have your movement number, you should apply for an Extract of the Archives here :

https://www.omegawatches.com/customer-service/extract-of-the-archives

It can be done online, and IMHO is worth the money spent.

Just ask to see his tools first. If he comes with a hand-held two pronged device, then I would rather say 'go to a proper watchmaker'. Just one slip and the caseback will have some heavy gouges in it, which may happen if the gasket has turned to goop.

And before I forget, as nobody has yet, and its a beaut : dibs 😀

Well a bit better but there’s still a bright light reflection on the crystal right at the interesting point. My gut feeling is that the hand is too short... BUT... I know very little about these so wait for an expert to come along !

The extract of archives sounds like what I'm looking for. Out of interest would that also show it going back for service, or just the build and delivery of the watch.?

As for the right tools. I was hoping more of the correct tool to fit the case. I don't know the right people to trust with it.

As for dibs. It's still mine for now... LoL
