Tudor Submariner 79090 - Seeking Advice

Hi All,

I am seeking your expertise on this watch ive been offered. The Seller has said it was bought in Japan some years ago. No box, papers or bracelet.

Serial is 833455, comes back to 1976, Seller though it was a 1998, possibly honest mistake or mis information from the seller he bought from.

He sold it previously, the buyer went to use the watch and the crown broke/ fell out and needs repairing. I'm expecting that to be either the screw needs tightening or a £500 job. Im expecting a £500 job and have factored that in to the price.

Although i have been looking at these for a while and have some knowledge i defiantly know when i need assistance from the professionals, here are some pictures, I would welcome any advise on its authenticity.

Clearly the bezel isn’t original. The crown is also not original but you talked about that. Here’s another that was previously for sale here. No bracelet either? For me it’s a pass

Pics of the inside would be helpful also in between the lugs.

Hi,
Thanks for your information, it's really helpful.

The bezel not being original, is that because of the patina you would expect that isn't here? Assuming it was replaced during a service at some point?

The crown stem looks intact so I am hopeful it just needs the screw tightening.

No bracelet is correct which is a shame.

From the pictures does it all look genuine or any doubt of a replica?

That listing you sent it interesting also, I'll have a full read through today. I will say I am being offered this at hundreds of pounds, not thousands so if it looks genuine I will probably buy it.

The seller is not savvy to open the watch, but is adimant it is original. I will make it clear that I am buying based on it being genuine and take it to a watch shop when I get it to check it out. If it turned out to not be genuine I would look to return it as its not as described.

Thanks

If the seller doesn't want to pay a watchmaker to service it and fix what's wrong, that's one thing. But to not open the watch to get pics of the movement, big red flag. A watchmaker can they'll open it for a small fee. More red flags with the price being really low, the wrong crown and broken stem or something in the movement itself.

You're asking for a lot of problems with this one and even if it's an original movement, the service, repair, and time to source original parts will probably cost you more than it's worth. Personally would pass and keep looking for another one. You'll end up happier in the long run.

As tempting as it is, sometimes it's better to walk away from an unbelievable deal because most of the time, they're not. Patience is something which is hard to come by, especially when you see a vintage piece.

Problem is with vintage pieces come vintage problems, amplified by the cost and sourcing of parts, finding a watchmaker who will take on the project, etc.

When you stop actively looking for something, the perfect one pops up out of nowhere.

The dial looks fake to me. If you take some time to study the printing of an original, I think you will see obvious differences. I haven't studied the rest, but given the ridiculously low price, and the fake dial, most likely it's all fake.

BTW, the 79090 was first produced in the late 80s, IIRC.

Spoke to a tudor service place earlier with Rolex trained staff and they say it's a genuine dial and case. I'm waiting for pictures of the movement at the moment.
Lots of conflicting information.

Let's see if you can find any other legit 79090 examples with that same dial. Just look at the pressure rating line and SUBMARINER. Look for yourself.

Also, see if you can find another 79090 with a serial number in that range, without a "B" in front.

Thanks for this point and the dial, let me mention both to the service team and see what they say.

Thanks

The 79090 should have a triple lock crown (3 dots). Rolex started using them in the early 1970’s. Your’s does not. Is it possible that the original crown and stem broke and the watchmaker replaced it with an older, less water resistant one?…yes. More than likely this pieced together watch has a bad stem, tube, and crown. You’re free to purchase whatever makes you happy just don’t list it here when you want to sell it in a year.

That case is definitely fake. If you look at the engraving letter E, the middle bar is the same length as the top and bottom which is a tell. Also, the crown is fake. The date font does not really match a 70s Tudor movement either and I think they use a brushed silver date wheel, not white. Engraving on the back does not look good and there is no wear from a bracelet.
