Tudor submariner 79090 - thoughts?

Hi,

Just received this watch after a trade yesterday. At first glance I felt straight away that something felt off. The quality of the bracelet, the color of the markers and hands, the engraving of the caseback, no dive extension and no reference number marked on the link near the endlink…

Unfortunately I don’t have the tools to open the caseback, so I won’t be able to take any pictures of the movement until tomorrow when I head to a watchmaker.

I should’ve made my research more carefully but I trusted the seller and here we are… :whipped:

Even though I have my doubts, I could still be wrong. I would therefore want to hear your opinions about about this watch based of these pictures. Thanks!

The clasp is clearly no good, which concerns me, because the market is crawling with fake Tudor Subs. Everything looks brand new, so I have a bad feeling about it.

I see no signs of wear (end-links) on the case, if used with the shown bracelet.

As DanS mentioned...

Not good…the serial belongs to a 1996. Here is a black one from ‘96 for reference

May I ask where you found the watch with that serial? 😀

That watch have a serial that starts with a B6 where the one I have starts with a B7.

Look at where the letters line up on T Swiss Made T on yours versus the HQ Milton one. On yours the 28 second mark is between the A and the D. On the HQ Milton one it’s right below the D. Also I’ve never seen that pumpkin dark lume on a late model 79090.

Also. I’ve never seen “5800” end links and from the pics it looks like a plexi crystal on yours but I believe they were all sapphire starting in 1995

The clasp should have a Tudor shield and not the Rolex crown

Great find at the 28s mark! That’s crucial.
Yeah the color is usually a lot “whiter”. I haven’t even found one with that color from the 90s.

That dial doesn’t look like it fits properly in the case (may explain why the cyclops and date seem so off)

Rolex signature on case back looks off, too

As others mentioned, the absence of wear and tear on the lugs does not seem commensurate with the rest of the watch. Certainly doesn’t look like that bracelet lived on it.

My money is on Frankenwatch…

I can’t opine on this watch as I am not Tudor expert (although yeah- just looking at the pics it sends up alarm bells), but depending on who you got it from, they may not have known this was a fake/franken. You shouldn’t be left holding the bag, but proceed with caution as they may have been ripped off and are not trying to rip you off.
Then again they could be a lying sack of shit and have already changed their contact info.

It does seem like he got ripped of himself and didn’t know it until now…
At least the guy is responding back but wants me to check with a watchmaker.

Ugh. I feel bad for him, but as I said, you shouldn’t have to pay for his mistake

Yes, the lack of wear on the case was what I reacted on first when I held the watch. It can’t be polished looking by how overly sharp the details are (not in a good way)

Also don’t forget that these watches used ETA’s and Tudor rotors are available all over eBay. It would be very easy for a watchmaker to open the back, see the rotor and say yup- that’s a Tudor.
