Thoughts about this Universal Compax 18k 284.445 ?

Good day everyone!

My watchmaker got this Universal Compax a few days ago and he is selling it. First time I was holding one and I quite like the model and the size.

Since I am not familiar at all with the brand nor the model, I'd really appreciate any input about that specific watch given its shape because I am considering buying it (priced USD 3,800 range). Service unknown and might need one to be safe, and the buckle doesn't seem to belong to the watch.

From what I gathered online, the black dial is not really often seen.

Thank you!

Looks legit to me. If you are buying from your watchmaker I would demand a service and/or warranty period

It’s a very nice watch from the late 80s. Price seems fair. +1 on service and warranty as a condition of sale.

It’s nice, but I really think the more vintage Compax had superior movements. The advantage of this one though is round pushers and maybe a bit more water resistant. However in the long run a more vintage model would hold its value more for it is desirable for collectors. I’ve collected for 45 years and as a collector I see this model as not having that classic vintage appeal, and unless you really like this later 80s model I would look at a caliber 281 UG or Zenith chronograph. I also think the asking price is a bit high as well ! Search on Omega Forums for Uni-Compax and Compax and really look at all the great vintage UG variants !

Thanks for the answer!

The service is not included and would be about USD $300 but warranty period is not an issue. If I buy it, I will also have to find an original and period correct buckle.

I am not against other variants of UG chrono (I haven't looked at all the models, to be honest) but I do like the small size of this one with its round pushers instead of then rectangles and gold case. I will keep thinking about pulling the trigger or not but price seems a tad too steep indeed.

Not worth it IMHO. This isn't a collectible UG. It's a modern variant of the vintage compaxes (40s-60s) which are the sought after ones. If you get bored of this you will likely never be able to sell it for close to what you're paying.
Ymmv but that's my take.

Your watchmaker should not be selling if they are not willing to send what they sell out the door serviced. Plus, $300 does not begin to cover the work of a proper service.

That's enough for me to pass on that one. Thank you all for your input! 😀
