Do you not believe, as Plato did, that the struggle between opposing points of view brings about a new or greater understanding of the issues?

Deeper understanding in this thread so far...

"Yes it is."

"No it isn't."

"Yes it is."

"No it isn't."

"Yes it is."

"No it isn't."

"Yes it is."

"No it isn't."

I would suspect that if Plato knew that after 2400 odd years following his efforts, that someone would invoke his name in defense of such a trivial subject, he would be oscillating in his grave at a rate that makes 19,800 revolutions per hour seem inadequate.

An apt addition to the deeper understanding level in this thread...

Whoah guys! This is getting really tetchy. @M'Bob has given his reasons for wanting to rescue the spring bar. The debate about whether that's a good idea or not has been well covered now. Whether or not anyone thinks it's a good idea is no longer relevant. Either you can give him a suggestion for preserving the bit or you can't.

Sorry if you think I should mind my own business - but this isn't in the spirit of the forum is it?

Cool, can you advise how to restore this original O-ring?

😉

On a serious note, I agree that keeping something like this spring bar may be a valuable thing to some (there are the "original yellow seal" fans after all). This is why I return all parts I replace on watches to the original owner, yes including old springs bars, and broken O-rings. I don't decide what is valuable to someone else, even if I don't consider it valuable.

Having said that, trying to make an old stuck spring bar operational is a level I've not yet seen in this hobby, so I think many here are seeing some humour in this, even if M'Bob isn't.

I keep joking that one day someone is going to ask me to filter out the cleaning solution in my ultrasonic tank, to preserve the "original" dirt that was in the bracelet and case...but it is only half joking...

You may be 1/2 joking, but when we clean paintings we do exactly that, old extracted varnish/dirt that we saved comes in terribly handy at just the right moment. As for the o-ring...make sure there is an oxygen scavenger in the plastic bag to slow down further degradation!

Spirit and Substance are two different things. The OP continues to justify his direction and this invites other ideas and comments. If we only accepted the first response to a question, this forum would be more worthless than boring.

So let him continue to justify his direction. There’s been no new information added for a while. The arguments for replacing were made, and now the thread is collapsing into snarky comments.
I’m backing out now.

If you want some dirty cleaning solution from my ultrasonic tank, I'm happy to accommodate. Please note that since this material comes from valuable vintage watches, I charge $100 per liter for it. Please let me know your email, so I can send the invoice...

Don't forget shipping costs -- they could exceed the low cost per liter you charging.

Absolutely, shipping and applicable taxes not included - thanks for the reminder. And just because I wouldn't want any complaints, here's a photo I just took to show you what the lucky buyer will be getting:

That is some primo dirt and body cheese in there. Note that photos are part of the description, all sales final.

Cheers, Al

I don't know about that. Plato often worked in allegories, and there are a few allegories at play in this thread.

Also, Plato ~believed humans were featherless birds, and would have this and plenty of other grimaces to contend with.

Forgive the rhetorical birdwalk, but: has anyone notice that, in terms of interest, snarky pile-ons are a close second only to "what kind of breakfast are you" threads? Curious...

Excellent.

I open watch cases inside a balloon categorized by year of last service. All the period correct air trapped inside the cases is saved. Balloons are for sale and may contain as much as ten watches of vintage air. Please specify year, and understand that leap years have an additional charge due to rarity.

I think M’Bob’s dedication to authenticity and preservation is to be applauded and I now regret discarding some very old and seemingly useless springbars in the past.

I would be happy to send any vintage collectible springbars I acquire in the future to you to be added to your collection, M’Bob. Free of charge. We all should, really. Who’s with me?

I bought floor sweepings from a local factory once. A gallon paint can for £1.00 (empty the can first!).

The factory was the Austin at Longbridge and I was running a Mini Cooper which had been made there. The speed of the production line was such that anything dropped was left on the floor and it wasn't worth BMC's time to sift through it. It was worth is for me though, finding bolts, nuts, screws, trim bits and the jewel -- a cast-iron valve rocker arm. These were only fitted to the "S" engines. All I needed was another 7 😁.

Dig out the film How to Steal a Million, the painting forger Charles Bonnet collected dirt from old Dutch paintings to sprinkle on his Van Gogh forgeries to add authenticity. Its a good film too if you like rom-coms -- 100% on the Tomatometer.

I have to give it to the OF members....now going on to the 5th page of a question that really wasn't worth an answer other than, 'throw it away, it needs replacing'. Maybe it's Covid related and everyone just has too much time on their hands as they wait for their next stimulus check.

We're just easily amused. 😁
