They could make more of the hit product. That's what manufacturers usually do.

What I don’t understand is you can’t even get a datejust right now. You walk into a Rolex only boutique inside a large jeweler and it’s empty. Some gold yachtmasters and a bicolor Sub plus a few ladies Rolex across 10 large cases. This is a stand alone boutique in full Rolex decore and nothing.

Exactly! I wasn't looking for a Daytona which is impossible to get, only tried to get a blue dial Datejust before Baselworld. Been in touch with several european dealers but nothing.
Than I put a deposit down on a new CK2998 Speedy.

Never mind Rolex, I was bored in Southampton (happens easily) a couple of months ago and wandered into Goldsmiths to see if they had the new Autavia on bracelet to try on. I did have a play with the blue Pelagos and the salesman told me Tudor were like gold dust and I was lucky to try that one on and I'd walk out with a watch worth at least £500 more than I'd pay for it - and I could sell it for a profit immediately!

Funnily enough there were two other customers in there being fed bollocks by salesmen and both knew exactly what they were talking about. Maybe we're performing a public service, who knows.

I have a 42mm Explorer 2, a watch I went for specifically because it's not obviously a Rolex to the untrained eye and because I'm not interested in all the messing around involved in buying a Sub. I'd have had a BLNR had it been announced when I bought the Exp2 but I just don't care about sucking up to dealers. Wish I hadn't sold my red Sub though...

Luckily I have a fickle brother who bought a black ceramic GMT a few months back but never really liked the black-only...it was actually available on the spot at the AD which is why he grabbed it (zero patience!); on top of that he got 25% off retail due to his partner being a BIG customer of the AD. So, long story short, as of last week I am now the proud owner of his black GMT (at $1000 off his discounted price!) and he walked off with a new BLNR after a 10-day wait. The same AD is now saying everything is backordered...

Oh, and my brother doesn't much like the BLNR either ... first world problems I guess!

I was in my US AD a couple of days ago. They had a Sub LN, DeepSea, three Daytonas, a black GMT Master, a generous supply of DateJusts, etc. It all depends on the AD. Apparently getting stock is a matter of your relationship w/Rolex, and the ability to pay for a lot of watches with little notice. They were down on stock at the end of the year, but are gradually getting replenished.

Interesting article touching on, and developing, many of the points so far.

This last week I started to have a look at ss subs with an eye on treating myself for my upcoming 40th. The hulk caught my eye and I've been really surprised how hard they are to get hold of at rrp in the UK.

I only became 'properly' interested in watches at the start of this year, and almost all my purchase have been through this forum. Therefore zero relationship with my local AD in Aberdeen.

I have quite a keen interest in behavioural science, and how this relates to our often irrational decision making. Despite this I still find myself being manipulated by this engineered scarcity and exclusivity!!!

I have about a year till my 40th, so have some time to possibly schmooze, an AD, and get on a 'proper' list.

Alternatively, and more rationally, I'll maybe spend the money on another watch on my list. Perhaps a vintage speedy or IWC Portuguese.

I enjoyed that article very much. Thanks for sharing it. I recently purchased a SS Submariner at a Rolex AD in a small US city. They had the SS Date version on hand, which I declined, and a day or two later they called me and said they received a SS Submariner (not knowing they would) and I bought it. No previous relationship with or purchase from this AD.

It still doesn’t explain why an SS sub is impossible to get. Rolex is past constrained production right now. Some brands sure, some Rolex model they have been doing it for years. Looks at the Daytona that rised in popularity during the forced constrained production during the zenith years.

So just been into an AD in Edinburgh (Laings). Still 'open' waiting list for the hulk......

However, to got onto the list, have to agree to the AD retaining the warranty card for 1 year and also sign some type of contract that prohibits resale of the watch within 3 years!!

W.T.F

Also the usual bollocks of local customers/customers known to them being prioritised, which is fair enough I suppose.

Next, they'll want 3% of the resale price, each time it is sold on.

If there was a 'dislike' button I would be hammering that now!

100% true, I can guarantee that is what I was told. I didn't go into specifics about the contract, so don't know the logistics of how it could possibly work!!

Give Laings in Edinburgh a call to confim on 0131 225 4513, if anyone wants to double check 😀

I didn't mean I doubt you, I meant I have doubts if this is some sort of official policy or one of those stories that salesmen like to tell "buy now, a price increase is coming next week!" or "it takes a year to make a Rolex and the steel is created in the fires of Mount Doom" etc.

Haha, that's a good point mate! Apologies if my reply came across in any way terse 😀

I can't imagine this is a rolex official policy and likely a peculiarity of this particular AD.

I am also on the wait list at an AD in Dundee, where I bought my explorer 2 from, and no such shenanigans were mentioned...... Just that not to expect a call from them anytime soon!

My suspicion is that ADs get in trouble with Rolex if too many of their allocated watches show up in the resale market right away; Rolex wants to control their distribution market and price, and they can't do that if ADs are looking the other way when flippers buy high-demand watches; also, I'm sure ADs are tempted by the fact that a watch they have to sell for list price may go for thousands more on the open market; would it be so bad to slip one to a friend, have her sell it online, and split the profit? So in order to avoid getting on Rolex's bad side, they're vetting their buyers and some are getting a little more "creative" than others, with the resulting goofy policies you see in this example.
