Oh, how times change! I've told this story elsewhere but back in 2006, I still wanted the white dial steel Daytona that was so hard to find and Rolex was doing the same silly stuff they are today. For no good reason, I called Barry Peterson up in Ketchum, ID (I live in Idaho) and asked if they had one. The answer was a quick no but they were being dropped or dropping Rolex and was I interested in a NOS GMT II with the Pepsi bezel? He said because it was unsold and a couple years old (!!) they would make me a very good deal. I asked the price and, delivered with sales tax, just under $2500. Needless to say, I gave them my CC info and the watch was delivered the following day. No funny business and even though the watch was made during the one year warranty period, it was sold when Rolex had begun offering a two year warranty and that's what I got. I also checked with Rolex on the serial number and dealer and they said all was good and that they'd sold the watch to Peterson's.
Back in 1989, when I bought my first Rolex from Merkel's in Sacramento (a 16233), I got the standard 10% off. In 2000, when I bought my 16610, I got no discount but was offered 12 months interest free financing so picking up a 16710 for $2500 new (but a couple years old) was the best deal I think I ever got on anything!
