What was the issue, prices too high or lack of quality pieces? Or a combination?
Sparsity was primarily the issue. Secondly the price, and last but not least, the few i found were in terrible condition.
Just like @kov wrote here, the ch24 and few local dealers were mostly wrong about the year, so it didnt simplify things 😀
One nice speedy i found localy in a nice condition, and papers said 1985, but they didnt match the watch, so was clearly a put together set 🙁 so i walked away..
There were also some special models like Moonphase or gold that i simply can not afford.

I think one has to be determined to pay premium when one appears in a good condition. So you must really want it i guess.

And this, btw, to me, is the sin equa non condition for looking or not for a birth year watch, in general. 👍

It is also the reason why a lot of people are saying "buy the best quality, first" - if on top of great quality you get the birth year watch for a decent price, then it's maybe the grail. Unfortunately, it's much more likely to find an offer where only one of the conditions is matching...

...but the collector is (or should be) a patient wolf 😗

Completely agree with you!
And yes, one of the few things i learned in this hobby is patience. However for me this would mean i would have to reserve a sertain budget for a watch and wait, and wait, and wait, and hope... 😀 but there are just so many other nice watches and even better deals, (un)fortunately i can not afford to buy them all.

Beside that i was determined to learn more about watch-making, so i sold my only speedy and invested the money into tools and movements that i can play around, learn, take apart and put together again. Thinking about visiting some watchmaking courses, which would also require some finances. I feel it gives me more satisfaction, rather than just owning a nice watch 😀

But deep inside i know it, that one day the right watch will manifest itself, so i can use the time now for other important things 😉

Getting distracted by shiny watches is always a problem. I was dead-set on getting my birth year 1603 in slate, HQ Milton had one. I got distracted right before it popped up and was cash poor- they of course sold it. I haven’t seen one since. But another will pop up at some point. Let’s hope I have the cash then.

And it’s awesome you are learning to work on watches. That’s a great investment I think, and agree- it will offer great satisfaction in the hobby. Having spent years in the garage or at the workbench working on my own stuff, it’s zen-like...just don’t start doing it for money- it can suck the fun out of it.

Hi there,
I was also looking for a birthyear 1985 Speedy for a while, and i must say it was somehow depressingly difficult, so i gave up 😀
Maybe some day it will just manifest itself..
Good luck with the hunt!

I don’t think I’ll give up, too stubborn once I get something in my head...

I’m having some serious issues with this serial number thing.

For example Chrono24 as mentioned before.
Most if not all are serial 48xxxxxx I contacted a few, one had papers from 1997 and the excuse said it was NOS.. never mind after a few emails they nicely apologized and change it to year 97.

Some others do swear its 85 with serial 48.

Still chatting with them...

Now I have found an auction for an Circa 1985 speedy but only 1 photo it says with warranty card and box. Serial number again 48xxxxx

I have the full serial and I love Speedmaster says 1995... so is this website really wrong or what’s going on... ‍♂️

@Pilot85 I told you exactly what’s going on earlier in this thread. You’re dealing with clueless sellers. 😀

Yes I read about it..

The auction watch is from a very very respectable auction house. I will contact them with my doubts as they say they have the papers of the watch.

Will let you know how that goes.

You don’t get the full picture.

It has nothing to do with how respectable the auction house is or might be. There are specialties in this Speedmaster world that a watch generalist expert is not necessarily aware about, especially when it comes to 80s, since the main hype has been for the early Speedmasters lately, and there is already a lot to learn there...

A subset of 48xxxxxx is correct for a 1997 watch. As well as another very small subset of 48xxxxxx was used in 1985. 48xxxxxx can be correct from 1985 up to 1997 or maybe even 1998, I don’t know exactly but for sure if you’re only looking for a serial starting with 48 you’re on a perfect way to find a wrong watch.

Unfortunately there is a serials table on internet suggesting that the 48xxxxxx serials are related to 1985 - which might work for any other Omega watch but DOES NOT for Speedmasters. And it’s a known thing.

There are still plenty of people using that table for assessing all their Omega watches - including Speedmasters - and this is where the confusion comes from.

Instead of trying to educate the planet on that tiny matter (I used to signal the mistakes on c24 as well, as you just do - but either used to get no reply or guys replied they are correct and I am a wannabe idiot) I suggest you to use you energy on something else, for example learning on how to differentiate a Moonwatch from the 80s from the Moonwatch from the nineties.

You will end up much less confused and happier each time you see a wrong listing on the web.

Cheers

Just for my further knowledge.

This bracelet does not seem to be from an 1985 correct because is written speedmaster on it. On most that I have seen close to 85 is only the omega logo.

Yes, it is @kovpics. But I tend to forget posting new stuff on IG. It became kind of boring after some years.

The 1479 you posted is correct with « Speedmaster » on the clasp. However it is a later bracelet ~1988, so hardly correct for a 1985 watch.

Generally speaking, you should consider getting yourself a copy of the Moonwatch Only book. It will help a lot in your study. 😉
