Serious question...

I realize that I may (no will) take some heat for asking this here but here I go anyway...
Can one be considered an Omega fan without being a particular admirer of the "traditional" Moonwatch? I mean can one understand the history and technical genius of the watch but not actually want to own one?

As others have said, of course you can.

The one question I have is, and no personal offense meant, but why would you ask this question?

FWIW, I'm a big fan of Omega and have no interest in the Moonwatch--never have. In fact, I'd say I'm averse to chronographs in general, as I find their dials too busy, and it's not a complication I find particularly useful/relevant for my life: the timing bezel on a diver is way more practical for me.

That said, I can appreciate the beautiful movement on a sandwich Speedy, and I do respect the history of the watch. I also know better than to declare that I'll never own one, as my tastes have already evolved a lot in the last several years and they continue to do so. For now, though, it's way down on my list of Omegas I'd want to own---I'd probably go for a De Ville dress watch first.

The question stems from my perception that the Moonwatch grabs more ink/attention than any other single model. There seems to have been a sort of following developing over the past decade or two which has driven the watch into the Stratosphere. I've been feeling this ever since I used to sell them and they got very little attention then but as I say since then they've gone through the roof! The "grass thread" and "Forbes thread" got me going I guess. lol

I got my speedy date and I am happy with it. Add to that my moonswatches and my smp’s I feel very welcome in the church of omega.

I’m doing my best to make omega fit the definition of a “church” but I’m not having any luck yet.
You hand over 10% of your income and in exchange get to hang out with a motley crew of mostly older people who all believe the same thing.

I don't own one but own double digit Omega watches from 1930s to 2010s, including a pocket watch. That's the best part of Omega is the full depth and breadth of their catalog that goes back over 120 years.
I agree and my collection too stops at the advent of the Co-Axial for no particular reason other than my grails all seem (for the most part) to be of that era. I start with some Seamaster Calendars and work up to the turn of the century or so.

That`s just because Speedy owners have more time on their hands to wright blogs and photograph their watches, the rest of us are busy cutting grass and such.

And yes the moonwatch is overrated, I read that in Forbes.

A 'Pro' cuts the grass at night as then they can use a moonphase Speedy

This has nothing to do with being a fan but more of being a nutter

Hey I am a Rolex, JLC and (put 20 other watch brands here) fan and don’t own one.

We're supposed to stop buying Omegas after spending only 10% of our income? No one told me that!!!!!

With all due respect, I'm sincerely puzzled at how this is even a question, OP.

Can you walk and chew gum at the same time (serious question)?

Again, "with all due respect" I was trying to find some like minded, accepting, non-snobbish, fun loving folks who wouldn't look down on those of us with less knowledge and desire to own just what WE like and not follow what I think is the hype. With all due respect of course! Sincerely!!!

I'm not looking down on you at all. The question you are posing is asking us to consider whether we should gate keep Omega fandom, for what reason I'm unsure...

Edit to add, don't own a Speedy, don't judge those who do or don't. Not a snob. Mostly Seamasters in my Omega collection, and a rogue Moonswatch

Fair enough! Mostly Seamasters here too but if one asks the question "what is the best Omega?" the majority answer (not necessarily here) would be the Moonwatch and it wouldn't be close. Just like if you asked generally (again not just experts) what is the "best" watch brand I think the majority answer would be Rolex because they've been (again my opinion) hyped so most people think they must be the best.
