Serial number?

Hey guys was looking around eBay and came across this Omega.

I realize it’s a redial the triple m is always a give away. Lol

But one thing I found odd was the serial number is covered up. Have not come across this before, although I’m pretty green with vintage, just wondering is this normal?

What is reason guys do this? To prevent people from stealing a real serial number to put on a fake? Or to prevent you from looking up the serial number?

Thanks

Yea there aren’t any people out there making perfect replica Calibre 286 movements going “If only I had a serial number to make it look legit”.

It is also sometimes done by dealers or flippers who don’t want people to be able to easily google around and find where they bought the watch for prior to marking it up, or in some cases looking up the serial and seeing that it was previously in/on a different watch or the watch looked different previously. There was a 321 serial number plate on ebay floating around that ended up on an ed white for sale and the seller covered the serial since many people had noted the number on that plate but the scratches on it ended up identifying it and a bit of a PR mess for him ensued.
