Roman numerals are just wrong on a wrist watch

While I like the looks of this dial I seldom wear this watch because I find the tip of the minute hand gets lost in the confusion.

How can one of Her Majesty's own subjects not know this? 😲
Maybe it was Emperor Charles V of the sixteenth century? Hmm, the French had a lot of them before they invented Louis... maybe it was them?
Great thread! - FWIW I'm pretty broad minded but can't love faces that mix Roman with Arabic, even on otherwise wonderful pieces.

I believe that it was Emporer Charles V that this story goes along with.

Although some nice watches are shown here in rebuttal to his original post, I agree with Engee. I’m not a fan of Roman numerals on watches.
Don’t hate me.

I think if Roman numerals are out Cartier is going out of business— yet suddenly and in a matter of 6 months they seem to have become all the rage among vintage and non vintage collectors who recently completely ignored them.

can anyone find a single Cartier watch that doesn’t have roman numerals?

I like Roman numerals- even if not Cartier.

That looks like a Seagull (Chinese) movement, not a Valjoux 88.

Yeah that's an ST-19, and is a clone of the Venus 175, not Valjoux.

As to the OP's statement - I personally agree. I can't stand RN when all the numerals are represented, but appreciate some where they skip every other, or only have numerals at the cardinal points of the dial. I don't own a single RN dialed watch, and for the most part find them a complete turnoff.

I'm with the OP on this one. Not a fan of Roman numerals on a watch and wouldn't buy one. Tell me these don't look perfect.

It's clearly me (and @blufinz52 ). There are several very nice watches here - and thank you for sharing the pictures - but to me they all look like they would be more attractive without roman numerals.

I'm with the OP. There are exceptions but to me Roman numerals usually make a watch look either cluttered or fusty or both.

I'm totally with you and can't stand Roman numerals on a watch face either. I've been through quite a number of watches in my years of collecting vintage but to this day do not have, and haven't had, a single one with Romans.

Clocks however are another story entirely...
