I think we can all agree that Roman numerals are completely appropriate on this watch.

The other strange thing about watches with Roman Numerals is often the bottom numerals are displayed upside down.
Not in all cases, but on quite a few watches.

Displaying any kind of numeral upside down seems incorrect to me.
It's as if the hands of the watch are looking at the numerals instead of the watch owner.

And it really doesn't make sense to display some upside down if Arabic Numbers are being used.
The "6" for six o'clock looks like a "9" when it is upside down.

Here are 3 examples:
Roman Numerals all facing up, Roman Numerals some upside down, Arabic Numbers some upside down.

P.S. I believe the third watch to the right (with the upside down Arabic Numbers) might be a replica and not a real watch, but I show it as an example.

It’s increasingly hard to distinguish between the replies that are meant to rebut the OP and those that are jokingly posted to prove his point.

There are lots of ugly dials with arabic numbers as well. ::stirthepot::

My son is actually nuts for watches with roman numerals. Picked him up a cheap Chinese-made one a coupe months ago that he really loves. My dad's daily wearer has roman numerals, and my son want to be like grandpa.

In my many hours of flipping through Watchrecon looking for potential purchases for my son I have seen a lot of them that look pretty nice. They are almost universally dressy, and since I do not really wear dressy watches I have not picked up any for myself.
One of the most beautiful things is when a child shares some aspects with grandpa. It’s so cool that your son loved the watch you gave him!

So, okay! Wrist watches.

That watch looks cool as hell. I would look like a James Bond villain by wearing it!

I don’t agree. My partner wears this De Ville Prestige model. It’s a very classy timepiece and draws a lot of compliments.
The De Ville Prestige model is simply one of the most good-looking watches you could find. I’m planning to buy one for my father and give it to him on Christmas.

Beg to differ...

Interesting that this Patek uses the traditional Roman “IV” rather than “IIII.”

Because this watch’s date window is at the six, there is no “VI” on the dial - perhaps supporting the idea that the “IIII” is often used to avoid visual confusion between the “VI” and “IV” being so near in the dial, with this Patek being freed of that issue?

On the other hand, seeing that layout’s imbalance between the VIII and the IV starts to lend more credence to that version of the story 😵‍💫

My modest roman numeral watch. I actually bought it because of the roman dial. So, I guess I disagree with the OP.

Arabic AND Roman! (tchrono's UG):
The functionality of this design makes it beautiful. Roman for the cardinal hours, Arabic for the minutes on the same track. Makes my big toe shoot up in my boot.

I very much have to disagree, Roman numerals can look beautiful on a wrist watch especially as apliques.

In fact I am looking for a haute watch with romans at the moment. 😀

Beg to differ...
Stunning

I think they can be very elegant. This Speake Marin is one of my favourites, unfortunately not mine just a photo from Monochrome
